Block heater for Prius gen III PHEV

    Hello to you all

    A small introduction.
    I'm Arjan de Weger from the Netherlands.
    Happyli married with four grown up kids.
    Proud owner since 2 month off a silver Prius gen. III model V known in Europe as Excecutive with solar roof.
    The Enginer gen III is paid and ready for shipping mids Jan.
    So Let's join the club of mondial Prius PHEV enthousiasts.
    I'm a dental technician, painter , excotic bird breeder and last but not least completely dedicated to the new form off driving with the Prius.

    I expect the enginer gen III end Febr. Begining off March.
    A friend off mine you know as Floyd 2 will help me install it.
    Well he will install it, and I will help.

    I seek your help for a problem i'm not able to solve in the Netherlands.
    You all know the ammount off fuel, the Prius needs by a cold start.
    We could decrease that amount off fuel by heating up the motor with a electric block heater.
    This electric block heater warms up the engine by 35 C.
    Sorry I'm a metric guy.
    My intension is to use this EBH all over the year, so in summer I can leave with an all heated engine, do what ever I have to do, and return, probebly without using one drop off fuel.
    In winter the heating up period will be much shorter. also less fuel.

    The EBH is very well known in extreme cold areas such as Alaska, Canada and the Nordic countries.
    But in Holland with it's modest climat it's completely unknown.

    The EBH is available in the Prius store but only American standard 110Volt.
    We in Europe need the EBH for Prius II(Floyd2) and III (me) for European standard 230 volt.

    I hope someone from Scandinavie read this and come's up with the answer.

    In Scandinavia we use Defa's heaters. This is what I have for block heating:

    There is different model for older Prius, you can find it from Defa's webpages, I don't know, but assume that there is some webshop who send these to mainland Europe too.

    Hello Arjan,
    I have a 2010 prius with a 4kwhr Enginer system. I get really good milage out of it but it is will never be 100% EV because of the ICE warm-up.

    Last Sunday my wife complained again that the car was cold inside after about 5 miles and the ICE water temp was still around 110degF. Sorry I am not normally a metric guy.

    My Prius will always start the ICE after I go ready. The first start will keep running about 1/2 mile. If the car is warm that can be as short as 1/4 mile. This is to warm up the catalytic converter. Then it will do some EV but not be optimum until the ICE is 155degF. However the problem is that I can use light foot pressure to get mostly EV and so I can go for 10-15miles and never get up to 155degF.

    Anyway, I just purchased my EBH from Priuschat at about $60. I will see how that helps. I also expect to run it a little more than most people would.

    The unit is 400W. I think it is just a resistor in a metal tube. If you cut off the plug and install your plug it would run at 1600w. That may work OK if you watch the temperature. You might then add a simple timer to run it on and off and on and off and adjust the timing to get the temperature that you want.

    Thank you Dan and Akusta.

    For what I know now I'll choose the Defa warm up system.
    It's a system adjusted to European 230 V
    It's an oil warming system so it also warms the engine better compared to a cool water warming system.
    And last but not least it comes with a compartment heater so no more de icing of the windows and a warm comfortable car.
    I all ready found a dealer close by.:)

    I really think it will make a different in fuel consumption.
    No more cold starts.

    There is also another manufacter, Calix. ( Use google)

    It's little cheaper also, the whole package Ebh and wires+plug to cabin heater about 170€ compared to Defa 250€. (In Finland)
