My Prius of 115,000 km decided to go boom on the ride to work yesterday.

I had the car towed to my toyota dealership. They are quoting $1900 for a used engine(no warranty) + about another $1900 for labour. Anyone know of a place in Vancouver BC area that can do this kind of work and can offer a warranty??

    Thanks

    Wow, how did that happen?

The only collision repair dealership I know of is Destination Toyota in Burnaby. They may have a different price quote.

I have found a company that will put in a used engine for about half the price, and 6 months warranty. Will see how it goes.

The dealer says the #4 connecting rod went. The guys replacing the motor said they will disassemble the motor a bit to try and figure out what went wrong. They also stand behind the hybrids and think it is quite unusual. As do I. But I bought it second hand with 80k on it so who knows how hard it was driven the first 80k. Me is not hard on my cars.

If they do a good job, I will post there name/contact for future reference of Vancouver locals.

    Regards

Sounds good. Glad you were able to find a place.

It is kind of odd. Our 2005 Prius, delivered in Oct 2004, passed 200,000km in July and is still running (albeit with a bit of oil use from the engine).

    Hi All,

Picked up my Prius with replaced engine on Tuesday. So far so good. The initial on-board diagnostics are showing that it is running better than the previous engine. The previous engine was plagued with a misfire issue since shortly after I purchased it. The problem may have been there since the day I bought it, but I wasn't checking at the time.

Anyway. I will keep my fingers crossed on this engine. The $$ for used ICE installed was less than $2000 including 6 mth warranty. More than 50% better than what the dealer quoted.

Anyway. For you Vancouver BC area people trying to wean yourself off the dealership service I would give "GN Autobody and mechanics" a try. They have been rebuilding totalled prius' from the early days and then selling them into the taxi fleet. They appear to know a lot about the prius car.

Burnaby BC, close to 2nd Narrows bridge.

As for the old engine. Ivan said the engine appeared clean enough, does not have an explanation for the blown connecting rod. "Just bad luck I guess". I just wish the "bad luck" happened 13K earlier.

    Regards
    Joey

Everywhere you say motor you mean engine right? They did not mess with the motors?

Usually blown motor posts here are accompanied by low engine oil.
Where do you get the engine oil maintenance done since you bought the car?

Yes everywhere where I say motor I mean (gas engine) not to be confused with (electric motor). A connecting rod gave and punctured a hole in the block. It made a mess(oil) on the highway and later when the engine was turned on briefly.
(I have gone through my posts an replaced motor with engine)

As for Oil. The engine would still turn over and run with three cylinders. When it was turned on to park it after towing the vehicle to GN autobody it was spewing engine oil everywhere. It made a mess on the street. So, low engine oil was not the problem.

I guess it was a hairline crack or fracture in the connecting rod that has been around for who knows how long, and it just decided to go.

But just to note, the dealer said Toyota corporate would not do anything seeing as the car was 13k out of power train warranty. The guys at GN autobody have seen these engines give 500,000 without problems on taxis so guess it was just my luck

You are not alone as a friend with a gen2 mentioned that he blew the ICE in his and had to replace it with a used engine from a totaled Gen2 that he bought.
