Looks tough for some of the more high tech bike racks where the rack sits low near hitch level. Suppose the strap would have to farther to run in a Prius, too. Take some pics when you have it installed.

    Friends,
    I ordered
CURT Manufacturing 11276 Class 1 Trailer Hitch, Pin and Clip

    from amazon.

Please suggest a nice 2 bike rack which will fit into this hitch.

I would also like to use the bike rack for my Tacoma.

I have ordered this by mistake
CURT Manufacturing 112763 Class 1 Trailer Hitch with Old-Style Ball Mount, Pin and Clip

    instead of

CURT Manufacturing 11276 Class 1 Trailer Hitch, Pin and Clip

    Is it okay ?
is old-style ball mount an extra accessory ? or this wont work ?
Do I need to be careful when I buy the bike rack ?

The ball mount should be a slide-in/out accessory, but my hitch is another brand, I think, so I'm not sure.

You are correct. The 112763 is just the hitch (11276) with additional slide-in ball-mount hitch accessory (hence the 3 at the end... there are other digits that provide other options bundled with it). You just will not use this part when putting a bike rack into the hitch.

Which sub-model of the Thule T2 did you get? I finally got around to installing a Curt 11276 hitch with 1.25" receiver.

It looks like at least one other guy on this thread already had a Thule T2 designed for a 2" receiver. But the Thule T2 917XT fits directly into a 1.25" receiver, so no adapter would be needed here. That should shorten how much the rack would extend from the back by half a foot compared to using the adapter with a Thule T2 designed for a 2" receiver.

In my opinion, the bikes are too far back and will put too much load on the hitch and attachment points of the Prius.

Sorry to bring back up an old thread but I wanted to know if anyone who has been carrying around bicycle racks for awhile now, and have traveled many miles, had suffered any type of problems with their car? I am just curious on the long term effects of carrying around a couple bicycles on the back of the hitch.

I know Jimbo69ny is this thread has been pulling a good amount of items with his PiP and I would be interested to know if he has had any car problems related to that.

I assume the bikes probably bounce around a bit, right?

I don't know. I never move bikes. But they do sell anti rattle hitch pins, those night help.

I have a Thule T2 bike rack with the Curt 11276 hitch with 1.25" receiver. Haven't taken it on any rough roads, but so far haven't noticed any bouncing issues.

I just installed my Curt hitch and drove around with my bike on it and it seemed like it will be alright. I guess it should not be any difference to having the same amount of weight in the trunk of the car right?

20140831_135509-1.jpg I ended up adding this bracket to mine, as the weight of a full size spare tire and a large job site storage bin seemed to put more twisting stress on the hitch point than I would have preferred. The hitch rack slides in to the receiver and two u bolts with rubber "pads" connect the two arms you see to the outer reaches of the rack. Much improved stability.

There should be no problem with the weight in your case, but there are some limits.

There is still a tongue weight limit of about 200 lbs. This is the maximum amount of downward weight that can be applied and includes the bike rack and bikes. With 1-2 bikes, one should be fine.

The above reminder of how the car was engineered for rear collision is appreciated. Adding a towing hitch will counter that design in a rear collision. Consider the size and weight of the car and what's out there having all the technology for crash survivor ability trump bike caring convenance.
