hi all, new owner and ex mechanic, how does the petrol engine start ? as we know there is no starter motor and the stopstart of the ICE is seamless, so how does it work ???
There are 2 electric motors and the one engine. They are statically connected together through a planetary gear system. The outer ring gear that goes to the wheels is attached to MG2. The middle sun gears are connected to the ICE. And the middle gear is connected to MG1. To start the ICE, MG1 is rev'd up to get the engine spinning without fuel. Once it reaches the correct RPM level, the fuel injection starts and it is very smooth. Likewise when the engine shuts off, the fuel is stopped and electricity is wasted to continue spinning the engine without fuel and then ramp it down so that it doesn't jerk the car as it stopped.
MG 1 always acts like the stater motor. Are there any power split device in Prius?or always it runs engine with out fuel?
Gen 1 and Gen 2 only had the one planetary gearset. Gen 3, PiP, c, and v have a second planetary gear slowing down M/G1. It is not a power split device as it only has one input and output at a time, unlike the main one where all three inputs can also be outputs in any combination.
