My experience has been with iOS. I suspect that the people seeing automatic Bluetooth behavior is a problem with their phone, not the car.
I'll even say this: I have an iPhone 4S and the latest iPod touch. The car smartly connects to my touch for playing music and to my iPhone for the phone/SMS/phone book/Internet access functionality. I recently drove a Leaf for a few weeks and the system on there is much, much less smart about the way it connects to things.

I have similarly noticed that when my wife's simple flip phone and my smartphone are both in the car, that the car connects to my wife's phone for the phone functionality, and to my smartphone for the media player functionality.

This feature sucks and according to Toyota there is no fix for it. Entune sucks. An epic fail

Unfortunately, I don't know if it is affected by platform, as the only 2 phones that auto-connect belong to my wife and me, and both are Android... in fact, both are Samsung. My wife's phone never begins auto-playing music, but then again, she does not store music on her phone. I have scoured the internal settings in Entune and phone and cannot find a setting to select permanent auto-connect options.

But as you say, both are androids. Your wife's phone probably doesn't autoconnect because as you said there's no music on it.
Again, with my iPhone, nothing ever auto plays. That basically is pointing the finger straight at your device.

On my C with Display Audio my iPhone 4 (running iOS6) autoplays with both the Bluetooth and USB connections.

If I'm listening to the radio in the car and plug the phone in to USB or turn on the BT connection, the car switches away from the radio and starts playing all the music on the phone in alphabetical order.

It's done this since I bought the car in May 2012, through three Toyota updates so far.

I'll just say don't get me started on Entune, and then let my eyes roll.... . apparently it was the best choice back in 2011 for the 2012 models that were coming off the line... and it's two+ year old technology. Things change very fast in the electronics world as we see. One minute the iphone 4S and the 5's are best thing out there and WHAM, next month we're talking on mini-tablets and phones the size of an etch-a-sketch!
My best pal has a phone she doesn't need a holster for, she needs a freakin' saddle!

One way I combat the "OMG this stupid music player started again..."
blues is right before I turn off the car, I press the power button on the audio. OFF!

I'm thinking that with the introduction of the latest and greatest in the Corolla world this fall, we may see some audio changes to screen, apps and features because it's time. That will be 24 months with, well, essentially what was tested tried and true while iPad 2, "all new" iPhone 4, the Epic and Evo phones just being sold.

You can blame the device if that makes you feel happy.. but it's the car radio where you choose the source. Changing the drivers choice for whatever reason is a fail. I do suspect that it can be worked around on the phone side by making sure nothings in the music queue, but really shouldn't have to do that. USB behavior is similarly unpredictable and overrides the chosen music source on occassion.

Ever since my PiP was new, I've kept a USB stick plugged into the USB port. The auto-startup problem never occurred a single time, until I installed the Entune software update that Toyota mailed me.

My Samsung Galaxy Nexus has the same auto play issue with the PiP, but none of my other cars with Bluetooth and this phone have this problem. You can point the finger at my Android phone, but it's definitely a combination of Android + Entune, not just Android.

Dianne's solution is the only workaround if you want to keep the PiP ;)

I turned off Entune a long time ago, having discovered that I have no use for it whatsoever. I got the update USB thing last year, but didn't use it. I have an iPod plugged into the USB port, and like the music automatically starting where it left off. (I never listen to FM, and very rarely AM on the radio. I get enough chatter from the voices in my head  ). I also have music on my Android phone (LG Optimus 9) but it only automatically connects for phone use, not music. I have noticed that when I have had the iPod out of the car and first plug it in, I get a message on it to the effect that a needed app is missing, and would I like to load it. Figuring that would likely involve Entune, I select "no". Doesn't seem to cause a problem not having that app. BTW, if you look up "technologically challenged" you might find my picture. So if I'm way out in left field on this stuff, that might explain it.:p

I just got my 2013 Prius over the weekend and this auto-play feature really is annoying. I mostly listen to podcasts in the car since I have a long commute, but every time I turn on the car and it connects with my iPhone via BT, it will start playing music instead of whatever podcast I was in the middle of. Even worse is that I mostly use the music on my iPhone for my toddler, so it will start playing lullabies or something from Sesame Street when my car starts.

Perhaps it plays Elmo singing, "It's Not Easy Being Green"?

That's Kermit's song, and yes, it's on the playlist... most recently it was Oscar's "I Love Trash". The joys of parenting!

    Here's what happens:
-you have the audio source selector set to Bluetooth
-you open the podcasts app and start playing some podcasts
-you turn off the car, do some things on your phone. The podcasts app stops being the default music player (if you lock the screen and double-press the home button, pressing Play will trigger iPod and not podcast playback).
-you get back in the car and turn it on. Since Bluetooth was the last selected source, it begins playing it. Specifically, the iPod, as per previous bullet.
The problem here is the phone, which "forgets" that the podcasts app should be the default music player. You could work around this by switching to another input source before turning off the car and then initiating podcast playback from the phone.

Gosh... I'm happy I'm not the only person with this problem. Too bad there is no simple fix.

    Just to back up jofo...

Same thing happens for me when using bluetooth instead of USB with my iPhone. Happened with my 4S and now also happens with my new 5S. I'm running iOS 7.0.2. Always happens when I activate navigation apps (Apple's native maps app, Google maps, Garmin USA) when my iPhone is connected via bluetooth. I have to pause the music. Or, I have to go into the "recently used apps" bar and close the music app. I have a 2011 Prius...so it is not an Entune Nav system...I assume. Very odd functionality. And a PI(|). Hard to imagine there is not a setting to disable "Auto-Music Play.

I am one more PiP owner with the same problem - mine with a Galaxy S4 connecting via bluetooth (and it did the same thing with my previous phone). I almost never use the phone as a music player in the car - so the audio system is not remembering the last use. I will manually select FM or Satellite after starting to drive...I'll be listening to that source...then about 30 seconds later, the audio system will switch to playing the music on my phone. It only happens intermittently, however - and I have yet to correlate it with any previous use of the phone or the PiP audio system.

So actually, I've now seen this happen sometimes. It is really sporadic though. Maybe once a month it will try to auto play, but I immediately switch it back to the radio and it doesn't come back for another month.
