Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires

The Primacy MXV4, Primacy MXM4 and Energy Saver A/S are not loud.

Part of the problem is the Prius is not well sound deadend so even quiet tires seem loud because of road noise.

Is there any info on mpg difference between Bridgestone ecopia EP422 and Bridgestone ecopia ep100 on a Prius?

 

None that I am aware of. In most areas of California I would just run the EP100.

 

Thanks for the info. I am in the market for new tires for my 2009 base model. I live in San Diego so I don't see snow or ice. From what I see on PC the ep100 is rated high. I am leaning toward the ep100. I like Discount Tire from previous experience. They have good after sale service. One other possibility would be the Yokohama avid trz 480. They are also rated high. I'll probably go with the ep100. Thanks for all the work you do on this site.

I would go with the EP100 or Energy Saver A/S if I wanted max mpg in your area. As far as we know those are the two top mpg tires in the U.S. in our size. From Yokohama I would go with the dB Super E-Spec for max mpg or the Ascend for max warranty and best performance. The dB is way overpriced IMO.

 

I would go with the EP422. IMO there are signs that the EP100 will be discontinued.

Thanks. Ok now I'm a little confused. Does that mean the ep100 won't be available in the next week or two when i make my purchase? If the ep100 is available and i get 4 of them does that affect me in any way?

 

He's concerned with replacement in case 1 tire is destroyed and you can no longer purchase that model.

I have never had a tire destroyed but anything could happen.

 

Yes, they are fine for a low cost, passable traction, high mpg tire in any climate.

went to Costco and they have the ecopias 422. The salesman told me the Michelins A/S are better. From the classes that Costco sends him he advocated the Michelins. They are not LRR tires he said but have an 80k mile warranty. The ecopias 422 are 65k. Ecopias are 496.40 installed the Michelins are $480.00 installed with the coupon.

 

The typical tire shop gorilla doesn't know or care about fuel economy. The fuel economy savings can be in the hundreds over the life of the tire.

The problem is on low mpg vehicles, a LRR tire doesn't produce larger numbers (increase in mpg) but the savings still shows up in your wallet. On a high mpg car like the Prius you could see a 4mpg difference between a LRR tire and a similar non-LRR. The difference can be even higher if you compare an ultra high performance tire vs. a great LRR tire.

If you get the $70 rebate the EP422 is a decent tire if you do not drive aggressively. Minus the $70 rebate I wouldn't bother with this tire. There are many other better performing tires in the $90-$100 price range.

 

So I thought I'd add that I've put about 600 miles on a new set of H rated Ecopia EP422s and they have performed quite well in the very wet conditions we've had the past few days. No issues at city speeds and they track fine at highway speeds, even above the speed limit in corners. I doubt I'll get on a skid pad, but I'm satisfied with the EP422s.

CLARIFICATION: I have zero complaints about MPG or comfort. I am concerned about the NOISE. These tires are so noisy - I can hardly stand to go above 50 mph with them. The store manager and chief mechanic agree with my assessment. So, I'm wondering if the Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires would be a better choice.

 

I don't understand why someone who use the term "break-in" on tires. New engine, with moving parts inside, do have break in period. A tire is just a piece of rubber in circular shape. Unless your tire is not round, otherwise, what are we talking about "break-in" period on the tire?
