I had a need to transport a small number of boxes of hardwood flooring in my Prius C2. After sliding the passenger seat forward I was just short by about six inches. Since the seat does not fold forward I was wondering how difficult it would be to temporarily remove the seat. I decided to leave the rear hatch open slightly a load the wood. Unfortunately I had to listen to the "dinger" for an hour and a half.
My dealership does not recommend removal of the rear seats. it is a difficult job, but most important you would be exposed to the danger of direct contact with the high voltage battery. BAD IDEA, If you have a 2 - 4 option Pruius C I suggest folding down both rear seats for added storage. I an single and drive alone. I have 2 cardboard boxes from the supermarket used to transport apples to the store. Got them free by just asking. They are the perfect size to completely fill up the fold down seat space. I also have two other boxes in the space in front of the rear hatch door. This setup is perfect for transporting a month of groceries shopping!
Thanks for the input, I forgot about the airbag connection. I like the suggestion from the U-Haul dealer.
pfft.. i was able to pull apart the rear seat in a manner of minutes. it's not difficult.. and even if you see the enclosure of the traction battery.. umm.. it's an enclosure. there's no wiring that's exposed to where you would be able to be in contact with high voltage... not unless you start unplugging things or cutting into stuff. the dealership who told you this is probably only freaking you out on purpose in case you screw something up.. and it actually is more difficult to seriously damage something than disassembling the car. but with regards to removing the front seat.. it's fine.. to be more "safe" you can disconnect the 12V battery and leave it disconnected for a little while.. but whatever.. i still think it's unnecessary. i will suggest what ztanos already mentioned.. lay it back. move seat all the way forward, remove head rest, and lay it back to make more room. i hate u-haul. overpriced and not worth it. sure $19.95/day sounds tempting... but they usually charge you more than $1 per mile.. which is ridiculous.
Just drive your Prius back to the US coming in from Tijuana, act really nervous and the Customs Inspectors will gladly remove your back seat for you.
