I'm new here. Just bought my very first Prius last Friday. After reading a bunch of info on here, I decided to get gas although I still had 1/2 tank. As soon as the attendant began the pump, the pump shut off. He tried a few more times, and the same thing continued to happen. I wasn't sure what was going on and was worried about over filling so I told him to stop. When I got my receipt, it had only taken 1.9 gallons and I was 2 pips shy of full. What's this all about?
If you lived anywhere but New Jersey or Oregon, I'd suggest fiddling with the pump nozzle, trying different angles, or pulling it half way out. But being in a no-self-service state, trying somewhere else is about your only option. Other cars do this too, with varying degrees of problem. But it was good of you to leave the attendant with the impression that the PiP's fuel tank is tiny.
I agree. Whenever possible, I return to not only the same station but the same pump. This is a station with a high gasoline turnover so gasoline does not sit in the tanks where there can be water condensation and deterioration of the fuel. Gas pumps need calibration more often than is required to be accurate. The most active pumps are more likely to be calibrated. Pump nozzles wear out and need replacing. All of these are reasons why gasoline seems less expensive some places. On checking it is not always less expensive or as good for your car.
LOL, you all are so funny! My husband took it to a different gas station the other day and didn't have a problem. Thanks for the advice!
