    tcerr,
I assume that you have a 3.3 volt camera and are discarding the OEM regulator. So you have 3 wires (red, black, yellow) coming directly out of the camera. Also you want to step down the car's 6.5 volts to 3.3 volts. If so, this is my guess. Hopefully Dan4500 or someone will check in and confirm this (I'm not an EE)
Car white wire to stepdown IN+
Car orange wire to stepdown IN-
Camera red wire to stepdown OUT+
Camera black wire to stepdown OUT-

Don't forget the video signal that is car red wire to camera yellow wire.

It looks like you have to adjust the output voltage with the adjustment screw. Don't forget to do that before you connect up the camera.

what I need is a diag to show 6.5 stepdown to 3.3v and 12v stepdown to 6.5v with using the lm2596 as to what wires go to where I real good on the install of parts but need help on the wiring setup

    Dan4500,
Your circuit worked Great. I had to reinstall a new camera in my Prius II. I had a factory Tacoma 6.5v camera in is first, but I think the mods. I did to mount it allowed water to get in. Luckily I wiring is good so all me work was done in the back hatch. Thanks again for all your work on the electrical (EE) side of this project.

    Thanks for the kind words.
As for "Tcerr" you need to connect per "our1vue" instructions. Do not confuse the red & black of the camera with the red/black of the car. The camera red/black connects to regulator outputs +/- respectively. This connection will send 3.3 volts to camera. You need to have removed the regulator that came with the camera if that is what you bought. The input of the regulator is connected + to white prius wire and - to orange prius wire.

Then yellow camera wire which is video to red prius wire and its shield to black prius wire.

You need to be very careful with the lm2596. I looked it up and it comes in many varieties. It looks like it may need additional components to make the 3.3 volts. I am hesitant to suggest anything here as I do not have any experience with this device. From what I see posted here, you should not do anything with 12 volts with the lm2596.

Please be careful and heed the warning of our1vue.

Installed my backup camera today. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this and helped answer my questions in the other thread.

For reference, I bought the camera on ebay from chenwen, but the supplied video cable didn't come with the extra pigtail wire like many examples. I just used the yellow and black from the video cable for the video+ and return wires, and ran a second wire for power back to my homebuilt regulator.

    tcerr,
The home made regulator seemed pretty easy to build and it requires no adjustments to output the correct voltage.

Also saw in CNN that safety groups want to make backup cameras mandatory asap. We're doing our part to make
    our Prius safer :)

I wanted to confirm the building of the regulator. I have a board but not like the one in the picture. Is it true that the lines on the board are connected? Mine only has individual holes so I would need to solder a wire to each component?

    Rick_L,
The holes in the board are all connected vertically. Any where you see the white line, there is a connection on the other side. What I started with was an IC board. If your board is just a bunch of holes, then you would need to find a way to connect them. I've attached a pic of the back side of the board (excuse my terrible solder job :)

    Howdy:
Thought I'd check and see if you've installed the camera. I've since gone on another quest to see why the Prius seems to attract rodents to chew on its wiring. I parked long term at the airport returning to find the varmints had chewed the speed sensor wiring. Very expensive repair.

    Rearview cam working fine.

    Dan4500,
Your timing is excellent ! The plan is to put it in next week. The car has over 35K miles on it so the warranty is just about expired. Since I'm planning on going the headliner route, I went to the Toyota dealer and got the connector pins that go into the connector. I'm hoping I can disconnect the two halves of the connector, pull one half back and wire everything in and then reconnect it again. Hopefully that will be easier than trying to work on the connector when it is still tucked deep in the headliner. Oh and I got some of those gray fasteners plugs that hold up the headliner just in case they break when I'm removing them.
My EE friend who helped me with the regulator is assisting in the operation. I'm planning on taking pictures during the operation if the patient gives me it's consent. After all, its rear panels will be showing :)

Thanks everyone for all the insights and installation details! Last June, I inatalled a camera in my friend's 2012 and today I just installed a similar camera in my new 2014 Prius 2. I chose to wire into the kick panel rather than the headliner. I built a new voltage regulator using the LD1117V33C voltage regulator with two capacitors and I added an LED on the 3.3 volt output for troubleshooting. The camera draws about 105 mA and the LED adds about 2 mA. This regulator circuit works down as low as 4.5 volts on the input, so does nicely using the 6.0 volts from the head unit. In the kick panel, I just used the Black, Red and White wires and left the Orange alone. Observing the LED, I found that the camera is powered whenever the Ready light is on, but the picture displays only in Reverse.
    Thanks again for the help!

I thought about putting a LED on the regulator to see when it was getting voltage. But when it is tucked behind
the a rear panel, I would never see it. Hopefully in 5 days I too can see where I've been :)

My special thanks to you for all your good advice and information. Yes, the LED is only visible if the panel is removed, but I found it useful to be sure my circuit was working and to monitor when the 6 volt line was on. I saw the 2-3 second start-up check signal when there was no camera connected. Then I saw that the camera was powered up all the time the hybrid system was "ready," even in Park or Drive. Hopefully, I won't ever have to see the LED again :) Meanwhile, with its 1000 ohm resistor, it only uses 5 mW of power. Also, I found that I had to tilt my camera up about 15-18 degrees to get a better view (less bumper in the picture). Good luck with your installation!
