I just bought my first Prius. Have wanted one since they came out and I needed a new car and am so happy to have joined the Prius family!! :) They are trying to convince me to take an extended warranty. It is a certified car so would get 12000 - 1 year warranty with the remainder of the power train warranty to 100,000. Is the warranty worth it? It would add almost 30.00 a month to my payments and I am thinking this is a very reliable car and should not waste my money. Any opinions?

Also, I hate the tires that came with the car. Goodyear Eagle LS2. They are rough on the road. I need a good all season tire since I live in NH and often have to drive in snow. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good tire? Been looking at the Continentals Pure Contact with Eco Pluc. . . .

    Thanks for all your feedback.

How many miles you drive a year?

How many miles on the car now?

Do you plan on keeping the car more than 7 years?

I have about 13k miles on my Continental Pure Contact with Eco Plus tires. Can't comment on how they take to snow. But, they do offer great traction in the rain.

I drive about 20000 miles a year. I usually keep my cars over 7 year - my last car was a 2003 Passat and I still have it as a second car at the moment. Have not gotten rid of it yet. There are 30,000 on the car right now. But I was thinking that I would keep this car for 2-3 years and then possibly upgrade. Who really know the future. The cost of the warranty is 1600.00 and I think that is high also. The warranty only covers to 125,000 - and the powertrain warranty is to 100,000. The most expensive repairs I could forsee are the battery and that is covered for the 100,000 as it. So hard to decide. But thinking I could save the money instead.

Thanks xpcman - I really am leaning to those tires. Gonna meet with the tire guys this week to talk about the benefits of either a winter tire/summer tire or a good all season. I don't usually drive in deep snow just some days get caught in a storm on the way home from work.

This is my opinion. If you can take the $30 per month you may spend on the extended warranty and save that into a savings account for 3 years you will most likely cover repairs. Prius is a reliable car and you are not driving that much. In 10 years the car will have 170,000 miles on it and most likely may Start to need expensive repairs than you can sell the car. I would not take the extended warranty it is a waste of money.

Are they smooth and quiet? Does your 2010 have a vibration at speeds in the 60s?

Smooth and quiet? - not really
vibration at high speed? - none at all

LRR tires and "smooth and quiet" to do go together.

If you believe in insurance policies, because that's what an extended warranty is, then I would say go for it. Think of how many thousands of dollars per year you spend on insurance(s), on the off chance that you might need it.

Would you play at a casino that kept 70% for the house and only made a 30% payout? That 30% or so is what Consumer Reports says the percentage is that the insurers pay for parts and labor.

I believe in insuring against things I can't afford to pay for (house, lawsuit, medical, etc) but not for insurance against car repairs, electronics or yard equipment. I've saved enough over a lifetime of not buying insurance/warranty for those things to be way ahead.

I'm sure a few have profited by buying but then someone wins at PowerBall too. But the game is lots have to lose to pay the prize.

Did you mean to say "do not go together." ?

I have been having issues with my new 2010 - I think it is probably the tires - they have new Goodyear eagles. Have had it in twice for balancing etc. to try to get rid of vibration. No luck.
They are supposedly contacting toyota to see if there is a report of this.
Otherwise it gives a pretty good ride. Hope they will work it out with me but if not I will
Definitely be changing the tires. Need tires that handle snow and winter weather better.
Mileage is good though . . . Getting over 50mpg. Maybe this
Vibration is something common in 2010s? Does not seem to be a common issue here in the forums.

If the NH is New Hampshire, studded snows on their own rims are good, lrr tires for summer, the extended warranty is great, read what it covers, now read what it doesn't cover, it is a joke.

Hi ursle, yes it is NH. I was wondering if I should go with snow tires. I never have in the past with my other cars but I do not know how the prius is in the snow. People are recommending Michelin IceX. I am going to stop into towne fair tires and go over the options with the sales guy there. I hate the tires I have on there now - came with the car - and not sure if the dealer people are going to be willing to change them. Probably not . . . We shall see.

I have a 2010 prius, and just replaced the OEM tires at 40,000 miles. My new tires are Goodyear Eagle LS2. They make the car feel clunkier, for sure, but they grab the road better. My mileage seems good... just took an 80 mile highway and secondary road trip and got 57 miles a gallon, driving normally.
