90k Maintenance

    Hello everyone! This is my first time posting a thread, I'm sorry if this has already been covered. I searched and did not find anything. I just hit 90000 miles and I wanted to know what services I need. My local dealer is charging $315 for the 30k 60k 90k 120k "major" service which mostly consists of inspections. are those inspections necessary? What did you have done at 90k? oh and is there anything else I should do? like change the transaxle fluid? I have had the car for a year and have put 30k miles on it. In that time I had the oil Changed twice, the tires rotated twice, I changed the cabin air filter and had the brake booster recall completed. I haven't had any "services" just oil changes from the dealer. I thought that since the 90k is a big one I should get it done. Thanks for your input -Brian

    sure, i would do the tranny oil. engine oil and filter, check and/or replace air filter. rotate tyres, what does the manual say? don't bite on the dealer scam. you should be doing engine oil every 10k and tyres every 5k. all the best!(y)

    My 2012 Prius just has 100K service and it is free from Toyota. Prius has 2 years service included. This is my second oil and filter changed. This time they rotate and alignment check only. Everything checks out okay. All service is free after 2 years later.

    Do this every interval

    5k - Tire rotation from front to rear and rear to front (depends if you're lazy like me or not)
    10k - Oil and oil filter change
    15k - Cabin air filter (depend on your environment, but check to see if its dirty)
    30k - Engine air filter
    30k - Transmission fluid drain and refill
    60-70k - Check tires for inner and outer wear
    100+ check alignment for vehicle drifting to one side or not when you let go of the steering wheel while driving at 65+ mph
    100-120k - Spark plugs
    100-120k - Engine and Inverter coolant drain and refill

    I hope this answers your question. The Dealership won't do anything different than what is listed on here, those other inspections they add additionally to the 30k,60k,90k e.g ball join inspection, tire inspection, brake inspect etc... etc... is just so it looks like they did a lot of work on your car, when its not. You can do most of these works yourself. The only thing I would be iffy is brake job replacement, unless someone on here point to the right thread about doing the brake replacement without the lap top?

    Why rotating the tires like an oil change? You shouldn't rotate the tires until you see some wear on the tires up front.
    Rotate the tires a little as possible because unless they balance them also and I doubt they do that sometimes just switching tire position or incorrectly tightening the bolts may cause an imbalance.


    All I'm saying is your exposing the car and paint to unnecessary wrenching at all 4 corners. I avoid rotation unless I see wear up front and on on a Prius that's alot farther than 5K miles.

    Just watch the tires for uneven wear.

    Since your driving the car very hard I would have the whole 100K which is:

    Trans fluid
    Engine Coolant change
    Inverter Coolant chnage

    Not sure where Santa Clarita is but if near San Francisco we all recommend lusciousgarage.com
    There the best Prius Independent and half the cost of the dealer and much better at it. They know everything about a Prius.

    Check out there website as they have real world recommendations for you car.

    Avoid the dealer as much as possible.

    people here, who have done early fluid analysis, and are keeping thier car long term recommend early tranny fluid change.

    It's a simple procedure, cost's under $40 in consumables. It really seems there's showmanship in Toyota's policy, basically to never change it.

    Ok so I can skip the inspections. Excuse my ignorance, but is the transmission fluid change and the transaxle fluid change the same thing? As far as the tire rotations go, I just do it at 10k so I don't have to take it in for an extra trip. The tires seem to be wearing fine

    Yes 10K is much better. Me too. That's when I can start to see a little wear. Its better at 10K because you can start to see if there are any funky wear patterns reflecting alignment issues both front and back. If you bounce them every 5K you'll never know because you really won't see any definitive wear pattern unless you drive like a maniac. You'll never know if the front or back end is out of toe unless you proactively get a front end alignment and thats $125 for usually nothing.

    Yes transmission and cvt same thing. Money well spent to protect that expensive cvt. Its very easy any garage can do it. Many threads here with great pictures you can bring to a shop. Bring them 4 quarts of WS fluid from the dealer and the pictures. Should be between $75 to $125 labor.
    Get the oil changed too while its on there rack. Bring them 4 quarts of Mobil 1 0-20 and while you are at the dealer buy the oil filter. Its like $5.

    Good for 10K on the oil and 30K on the trans fluid. Thats about 90% of what this car needs for a happy life. Great car.

    I change my 07 CVT every 30K and use a high performance cvt fluid. Redline D6. Its awesome.

    Going to an indie beats sitting at the dealer all damn day. Then they rape you.

    Here's a video on how to do the oil change yourself


    Here's a video on transmission fluid drain and refill, you don't have to remove the whole plastic under panel underneath to drain and refill the fluid. You can use the oil service flap and loosen the bolts with a 10mm hex socket, and refill from the top with a long hose and a funnel, or you can just follow the video lol...

    Thanks for the video. I plan to change oil and filter by myself after 2 years when Toyota Service runs out.

    I agree you don't have to remove the whole under engine cover, just the flap will do, for oil change (or transaxle fluid change). Personally I prefer complete removal though. It is a bunch of extra fasteners, more crawling under, more grit in the eyes, and so on. On the flip side it improves access, and saves wear-and-tear on that flap. Also gives a better view of CV joints, helps in spotting any leaks, and so on. Just my preference. ;)

    Luscious Garage recommended the 30k interval for at least the Gen 2 Prius, and the Priuschat thread for Gen 3 on this topic had most folks supporting a CVT oil change at less than 50k miles.

    Thanks for the replies! I just called 2 local dealers one quoted me 175 for a transaxle fluid change, the other one quoted me 100. Is that a good price? Also, when I called my service advisor told me that it doesn't need to be changed. What are your thoughts on why my toyota service guy tells me I don't need this service??
