We just bought a new 2013 Prius 4 and after getting it home noticed that when you push P to park and then let off the brake, the car will roll a few inches. Is this normal or should I ask our Dealer to look at it. This is our first Prius and except for the Nav unit we love everything about the car. Thanks, Mark
Welcome to the forum. What you describe is normal. If you don't want the car to rock or move when parking, apply the parking brake before hitting "P".
Thanks, It just seemed to roll a little more than our gas cars do. We hardly ever use a parking break.
My Prius and Escape Hybrid both do the same thing. It seems like there is more roll than in a conventional automatic, though.
Like others, I always use the parking brake so I haven't really noticed it. I hate the feel of the car slamming against the parking pawl.
I suspect the teeth in the Park gear / pawl are rather coarse (greater pitch between teeth) compared to some other cars, so it can roll farther to get centered on a fully engaged position.
Always a good practice to use the parking brake whenever you leave the seat. It prevents accidents such as this. Also, you do not necessarily need to hit the P button. Powering off automatically puts the car in park.
