Didn't realise the current gen had noise makers (er a vehicle proximity notification sound) is it the same ((electromechanical device)) in the C ?
I actually sold a set of LRR tires by hearing a guy pull up to a stop sign behind me and knowing it was a Prius.
My wife says that she can hear the Prius pull up behind her in the driveway better than a normal car due to the unusual sounds of the electric motors, inverters, etc.
Not sure why so many want to remove the noisemaker. I think it's cool. It's not very noisy, either. I was washing Pearl S in the back yard and when finished backed out to put her in the garage. The neighbors were in their garage and heard the noisemaker as I moved by them. Their jaws dropped. I told them it was about to hover.
Constant speed electric motors make a 60 cycle humming noise. Variable speed electric motors with inverters make a totally different sound due to the switching frequencies of the power transistors.
Where I live, there's a lot of opportunity for walking. Also, where I live, the people who own Prii are the ones who didn't buy a LEAF or a Tesla (Actually EV owners have the Prius as the "other" car). Which is to say that there are a lot of advanced tech vehicles in this neighborhood. I can hear that whine and every time I do, it is a Prius, or a Lexus, or anything with HSD, or even the other brands, now that everyone is jumping on the hybrid bandwagon. I am surprised that I can still hear it at my age. I also didn't realize they are starting to put noisemakers on. The LEAF's VSP makes the same noise as the inverter, so I'm never quite sure what I'm hearing. And as for the Prius...I'd expect them to put the VSP inside the car
