The 2013 Prius replaced my wife's Acura TL last week, which is going to be my daughter's first car when she gets her license later this year. The TL was getting less than 20mpg.

Because my daughter is getting the TL, we needed another car. One choice was to let my wife have my Mini Cooper. However....I didn't want to give up the Mini.

So we went with the Prius. Figured it would have a lot less maintenance than the Mini (it does get 37mpg blended). The hatchback can haul a lot. And my wife would just scrape the heck out of my Mini rims if she drove my car.

So far....I like the Prius. I didn't think I would....but I do like it.

 

Just got rid of my 2011 civic si.

6 speed = lead foot

Not to mention the premium fuel.

It was weird filing up after a 500 mile tank for $30

I had a sh!t eatin grin.

I went from a 2006 RAV4 Limited to a 2013 Prius Four.

 

Replaced 2011 MB ML350 recently for Prius IV. Mainly I wanted to get out of high lease cost(payment, gas, maintenance). It is 'wife's' car but we work together at our business.

Still got 400+hp 300zx TT as weekend car

 

I had V8 Toyota Sequoia SR5 with 13mpg city and 16mpg highway, Had to start driving 200 miles everyday so got rid of that and bought 2010 prius III and absolutely loving it. Wife is driving MB 2002 C240 and thinking about another prius. Also has parked 1994 Toyota corolla as a backup car incase either one of ours break.

 

Really interesting reading what folks had driven previously before the Prius. My daily was a 2005 MDX bought new. I drive a lot to the tune of 20k or more a year and was filling up with premium twice a week most weeks. Plus sitting in northern VA traffic and watching the needle in the fuel gauge drop motivated the switch to my 2012 Prius III. Now the MDX sits in the garage and is only used for long family road trips and winter duty.

A month after purchasing my car, wife sold her 2003 530i to Carmax and she purchased a 2012 Prius IV. She misses the driving dynamics of the BMW but loves all the tech with the Prius. We certainly don't miss the repair bills tho.

 

My previous car was a 2008 Peugeot 107. It reliably gave me 50 mpg UK (about 42 mpg US) in the city and on the highway. I liked the car, had it nearly 5 years, it never let me down, and although it wasn't a quick car it was good fun to drive.

But to move to a Prius which is much bigger, way faster, far better equipped, infinitely more comfortable and an automatic and still see my fuel consumption improve to 57 mpg UK (about 47 mpg US) and seemingly improving with each tank as I learn how it likes to be driven (only on my third tank) - why didn't I do this before? I've only had it a couple of weeks, but I'm loving it - I'm actually enjoying commuting to work!

Those mpg figures are calculated, by the way - the computer on the Prius reported the last tank at 60.5 mpg and is currently showing 61.8 mpg. The Peugeot didn't have a computer, but I had it on Fuelly and before that kept a written log.

I suspect the Peugeot 107 might be unfamiliar to many here, so here's a picture of it.

 

Back in 2006 I traded my 2003 Full Size quad cab 4 wheel steering 4 wheel drive pickup, getting 11 MPG, highway, on my 75 mile trek to the dealer. Picked up my 06 package 6 and sheepishly drove home...got home, averaging 50MPG...so it didn't hurt that bad...loving her ever since...recently sold the old girl and am looking for a replacement...

As you can see, I was almost exclusively a Mazda driver, though mostly by coincidence.

I drove the Mazda5 today for the first time since buying the Prius. It's a stick shift which was one of the main selling points on an otherwise utilitarian minivanish car, and while I do enjoy driving a stick, at this point in my life the simplicity of the Prius' transmission and the incredibly easy economy are much more important.

 

Makes me chuckle how many Prius owners have recently owned 'sportier' cars. Over the last 10 years, I've had the following:

- 2004 Subaru WRX (modded to all hell)
- 2007 Subaru STi
- 2008 Subaru STi
- 2007 MINI Cooper S
- 2011 Honda Civic SI

I finally woke up and smelled the gas mileage and purchased a Prius last week.

 

Coming from a 2006 g35 coupe 6spd mt. Before that it was a 2003 honda s2k Suzuka blue. God I miss that car...

 

2006 Jeep Commander Limited 340HP Hemi V8 13/18 mpg.

 

2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS with a bunch of appearance/interior mods. 126K and only gave me problems when I caused them. Nothing but good things to say about Hyundais (2001 Accent GS for 8 months after that until it got totaled.)

But, nothing else gets 57mpg. So Prius it is.

 

2000 Honda Civic Si was my prior car.

 

Had an '09 Hyundai Elantra with 77k miles on it. At 76k, the transmission began slipping and that was replaced under warranty. The last several weeks I had it, fuel economy SUCKED so bad and I just couldn't stand it anymore! My friend had recently gotten a Prius and let me drive it and I got "the bug." I went to a dealer "to look" at priuses and camrys and ended up coming home with a prius that night. oops! I saw an Elantra like mine the other day - same color - and it made me kinda sad when I saw it. I almost felt a little bad. It's amazing how we get attached to our cars

 

I replaced my 2002 Mazda Miata MX-5 SE (6-speed manual) for the Prius as my daily commuter. I still have the Miata. Still the most fun little car around for the price you pay for one! Puts a smile on my face every time I take the Miata out of the garage. I commute at least 60 miles a day if I do not "detour" and go anywhere else. I used to use 2 gallons a day in my Miata... now I'm using a little over 1 gallon for the same trip. My Miata likes 91 octane and my Prius likes the 87... so with all my driving, I like the Prius. For fun, top down along the coast, no contest!

The vehicle that my 2013 Prius Model 2 replaced is a 2001 Lexus IS300.

I had bought it in late 2000 as it was part of the first resurgence wave of the affordable-ish RWD Japanese sporty cars after the demise of the all-out Japanese sports cars (Supra MKIV, 300ZX, RX-7, etc.) The IS was a lot of fun and rock-solid reliable under a lot of abuse... but as premium gas prices rose and stabilized to ~$4 mark... it became quite the drag to do the things I had used to enjoy, like buying a season passes for "local" (~180 miles each way) ski resorts and racking up stormy weekends at a fuel consumption of 21-23mpg. I ended up curbing those activities altogether for a couple of years.

When the IS began to show hints of reduced reliability these last few months, I decided that it was time to opt for a new primary car... one that better fits both the everyday realities of my current locale (the potholed streets of the SF Bay Area, i.e. cheaper vehicle and higher-profile tires), and my stifled desires to roam the highways again. The 3rd-gen Prius was the best choice to meet this need, while keeping the IS if I ever needed to rip it up like a hooligan again (which I did this weekend).
