Why do I have to keep a pencil-and-paper gas log?

I'd like to see a built-in display that logs miles driven between each fill-up - in other words an automatic trip counter that resets after each refueling and records the date and current mileage in a persistent log. Anyone share the sentiment that Toyota human factors engineers overlooked the most obvious thing when they left this out of the instrumentation?

:)I kept the fuel mileage and gallons used on our 1999 VW NewBeetle diesel. Did so for many years and finally quit. I now drive a Prius Plug In and know I get great fuel mileage. Personally, don't see the need to track.

I use a App called "Fuel Log EVO" on my Iphone. It is simple, works and it cost $0.99!
I put the data in before I leave the pump, takes all of 10 sec!
It just doesn't get any simpler than that! :)

No. I'd rather the Toyota engineers focus on something more important like getting us more mpg. There's a study out there saying too much automation actually making people dumb. There are too much automation in this world already.

If you want to keep track of your actual mileage, you're better off doing it with pencil and paper. The mileage readout on the display is usually off.

It appears that automation has already done some damage to some people.

Were you wanting to be able to trend trip lengths, independently record MPG per tank, or both?

I'd like to drive away from the pump without having to remember to press Trip A or B. (Before my PPI, I had an Insight, which had that feature built in.) Apart from that, I'd like to see Date, Gallons, Miles, and MPG recorded without have to log the data myself somewhere else. Trends and graphing would be nice to have but not a necessity.

For those who use their cars for business, I would like the ability to track mile based on GPS coordinates/locations so I don't have to track it manually. It would be nice at the beginning of a trip to press 'start' and at the end press 'finish' or something similar. Then at the end of every week or month, download to my phone or computer. Sounds simple enough - maybe there is a phone app out there that already does this?

yes, this has come up many times. many of us would like to see more access to record keeping. we know it's in there, there's just no way to see it without toyota's secret software.

The gallons would have to be manual entry or some kind of estimate. It would be nice to have running record of estimated display MPG and total life estimated display MPG. I have lost that info. Alls I calc is real MPG based on gallons actually filled up. and since we have a PiP thread, let's record kWhr too (or do we already?).

But why not have a key pad and enter gallons, price, station name, gaso type Reg etc. These are the things I log. I just write miles on the receipt and enter onto *.xls when I feel like it.

    That's a metaphor for manual record-keeping.

Also, sometimes it makes them write sentences that is not grammatically incorrect, too.

I feel this is a great moment to mention 'Fuel Me' again, which is basically taking this concept to Google Forms, making it very easy to track all your stats, without having to pay for anything, or rely on a service which isn't Hybrid friendly.

Make a spreadsheet. If toyota was logging your tanks you'd have their 5~10% BS factor perpetuated.

Not sure if this is what OP means, but I like to RESET my TRIP 1 on the EV ratio screen each fillup. I keep Trip 2 going for lifetime of car.

I use trip A ODO for each trip MPG and leave trip B ODO for lifetime.
