If your HSI is near the power zone and they still get angry...that is their problem...not yours. Besides, they can just go around you. Personally I find even not in the power zone that EV mode provides all the power I would ever need.

Would you believe that in 19K miles I have never even tried power mode?

Never been to Ithaca, NY have you.... Them things is more like goin' straight up a cliffside than a hill. Hill does not describe Ithaca, NY. They got 3 story houses built on the hillsides where each story has a door on it from the street.... Now here in Geneva we have a nice hill. LOL

He's in ECO mode, he's saying the HSI goes into the PWR region.
And Jimbo, I've seen that before: the throttle position has little to do with the HSI progress bar. I've seen many times the bar go further to the right even when my foot's position was fixed.

I was replying to the post where he said he was in ECO mode, and making the point that I have never seen the need to use PWR mode. And I understand about the HSI indicator. ;)

That is exactly correct. Many houses have doors on different streets that open up at different levels. I have an apartment house at the base of south hill that has a basement apartment that is partially at ground floor and partially below ground and its only a 500 square feet apartment.

No it doesn't have to be the HSI. I can be in all EV mode and it will move to the right without me taping any harder. I can sometimes let up on the pedal and prevent the inevitable but at some point it will turn on when going up on of the big hills.

Curious why you decided to go with a plug in over a regular Prius knowing this would be your commute.

Great job Jimbo. I'm in relatively flat suburban Chicago. Work in only a few miles away. Even with dropping off the kids at daycare I can make it home without leaving EV mode. I do go to PWR mode when I have the extra juice. Even with that I cannot keep up with the flow of traffic here without annoying some others. But I'm always in the right lane of a multiple lane road.

My last tank was my best. About 1850 miles, 71% ev, 232 mpg displayed, 221 mpg calced considering gallons reported by the pump and miles by the odometer. Tank before that was similar, also over 200 mpg. Fill ups this year were on January 5, April 8 and August 8. Lifetime mpg of 160, including the drive from Buffalo to Chicago last April.

because he's still getting better fuel economy than a regular prius?
because, if i remember correctly, he paid less for the plug-in version?
and because yet again for some (most?) people this is not a purely financial decision.

Yes because I am still getting better fuel economy than a regular prius. And yes I got a great deal on it. I forget exactly but around $32k off the showroom floor with the advanced package.

But remember, there is a pretty big penalty to the environment for making a large battery. It only makes sense if you can use it effectively. There is a thread discussing this.

Same thing is true if someone regularly uses the Prius for about 95% EV miles. It was a waste for them not to get an all electric vehicle.
