While parked I start my PIP and immediately hit the HV/EV button ice comes on. I let the car warm up wait for the ICE to turn off and EV to turn on. any effects to mpg? I'm not hurting the car my doing this?
If your intent is to warm up the ICE why not do it on the road, in your neighborhood? I guarantee without fear of contradiction, your MPG will not improve in the garage. Incidently, starting the car. In EV and just goosing the pedal a bit more will automatically put it in HV to automatically return to EV after warmup. I have revised my thinking about the HSI operation. Let the car operate as designd and one can get great mileage, even in mostly HV. 65 mpg at 65 mph is outstanding . With EV assist on a short trip. 118 mpg is the norm ( 10-15 ) miles.
You don't need to warm up ICE to use EV miles. If you are preparing for a known condition that requires a sudden burst of power, do it while moving or after a few EV miles are used up. Note that you don't even need to warm up. If you floor it, PiP will use the ICE at full power. It may not be good for emission but safety comes first.
You will probably want to start in hybrid mode in the winter time to get some heat into the car. A pure electric car will have to use battery to heat the car which is terribly inefficient. Also, I would expect the mileage to go down in the winter. I haven’t been through a winter with my new PIP, but it will be interesting to see how the mileage decreases as the temperature goes down.
No heat in EV. And defrost is a button pushing maze ( w/o the ICE ). However, in cases where it's necessary to see, just use the full defrost mode.
Last winter, I got by with only the heated seats most of the time. I needed to use the gas engine (defroster turned on) was used only when the windshield fogged up.
Heated seats do the trick in SoCal. But we don't go below 20 here in LA…. except rare occasion. The bun warmers are quite nice. The foggy windshield is the big issue.
wrong, the PiP has no electric heater and will automatically turn on the ICE for heat. please see the FAQ for more info. heated seats go a long way toward reducing the need to use blow heater at all.
. Sorry for the delay. . That was a joke, I can seea block heater In Fairbanks, even Minn or . Yes just a joke. Even during the Summer in Sacto with temps of 80 to 100 and more, my ICE will run, inadvertently. So using a BH to preclude ice operation would bea waste of energy and $$.
We get some cold temps around here in winter, so the BH will reduce warmup run cycles. On another note: I just sold my Prius C and bought a new 2013 Ford C-Max Energi
