I have been reading the forum a lot but decided to sign up and contribute. I recently got a 2006 and am very happy with it. I changed the oil and filter to 5w40 penrite. Also changed the cvt fluid, the dealer told me not too as they are sealed for life, I changed it and I am seeing quite a dramatic fuel economy improvement. You can see the difference in colour. I also attached a screen grab from the toyota site telling everyone the prius cvt has cones and pulleys!! The cvt is a work or art as it is all helical gears and is a differential, I would not have got one if it had cones and pulleys. I also put in my scan tool today and saw the huge amounts of data to he had, almost too much to keep and eye on. I am new to this, does anyone know how to check if the o2 sensor and air/fuel ratio sensor are operating properly from scantool data? and what software to use? Hi to eveyone on the site. Looking forward to learning a lot.
Congrats on getting your Gen II! How many miles are on it if you don't mind my asking? I don't know about checking those items with a scan tool. If something weren't right with those, you'd be getting a check engine light and then be able to pull stored fault codes with a scan tool. LG-AS695 ? 2
It has 170 km which is around 105 miles. I may just replace the sensors anyway to keep it running well.
I have an 06 with just over 68,000 miles. I was wondering about maintenance on the CVT. You said "quite a dramatic fuel economy improvement". What kind of improvement? I currently get between 43 and 45 mpg in a rural setting and as much as 48 mpg on the highway. Several times I gotten as high as 56 mpg. Also, how did you handle sealing up the transmission once the factory seal is broken?
The CVT is no more factory sealed than the engine oil is, from this site you can see pictures of a drain and fill plug. They recommend new crush washers but I dont see any leaking. I noticed nearly a 1L per 100 increase when changing the cvt and engine oil. The cvt fluid was stuffed so I think it has something to do with it.
Hi everyone! I'm looking into buying an 06 prius! I was wondering what is a fair price for an 06 prius that's in good condition. I'm not sure what package it has (yet) although I know it has leather seats. I'm also going to take it to a mechanic if I like it, and also check the carfax. Any advice someone can send my way when I go to look at the car? Thanks for any advice!
Please forgive my ignorance, but what does "1L per 100 increase" translate to in miles per gallon? Also, when you write "The cvt fluid was stuffed" do you mean it was some what perished or worn out?
You are good! I have 2006 for 7 yrs and I am just hooking up SCANgauge now. Never too young. Gee I have not heard of anyone changing out O2 sensors at 105K.
...try CarMax.com they have no-haggle pricing including new Toyotas in a few locations including MD (set a wide geographic search)
I just look at general wear and tear, good body and interior and clean well running engine etc. I dont tend So 1L improvement is roughly a 10MPG increase. In fact this has now gone down again so the initial couple of weeks improvement seems to be slipping away. CVT fluid stuffed does indeed mean old/used insert anything you want really! I stuffed my arm could mean you broke/fractured your arm
Thank you for getting back to me. I'm sorry to hear the improved MPGs are slipping away. I'll tell you what I did to help improve the mileage on my car: I had the Toyota dealer clean the throttle body. This helped with the MPGs and the response when I needed to accelerate quickly. I purchased a K&N filter to help improve the air intake. It's a permanent filter you have to clean every 50k miles, or so. I use Lucas Oil/Fuel treatment for gasoline and diesel every month to keep the throttle body clean. I hope this helps with improving the MPGs.
Not all my economy has slipped and so I did after all see an improvement however I dont know if it was from the new grade oil or the cvt fluid. I will clean the throttle body tomorrow with some spray.
Please fill out your locale. By your slang I assume Australia? Never heard the term stuffed over here. Don't use 40 weight motor oil to thick. The engine's vvt is oil driven and not designed to work well with 40 weight oil. Don't replace sensors unless they fail and throw a DTC as previously mentioned. You'll spend money needlessly and may damage the threads taking out the sensors as there not really easy. No return whatsoever on your money except to satisfy your ocd. Best part of a Prius is its low maintenance. Don't defeat that. If you want to improve your mpg replace the Inverter coolant. You will see no mpg improvement changing the cvt fluid unless its really "stuffed" and yours wasn't becasue the original fluid looked pretty good.
