Hi all, I purchased a new Prius v yesterday! yeah! going on a road trip from LA to Vancouver in 2 days. Any concern with driving a new car with zero miles on a 2500 mile round trip?? does it need to be broken in gently? just want to know your thoughts... thanks!!

As the MANUAL states, avoid prolonged periods at a constant speed, avoid hard braking, avoid hard acceleration. In short: same as any other car. Since you're driving in mountains most of the way, no worry about constant speeds. Enjoy the car and when you get back it'll be all broke in.

    Some ideas.

Drive it around town a bit before you go. Get the first 100 miles on it locally. The first morning of your trip do only a few hours, try secondary roads that will cause you to change your speed. Stop for a long lunch. After lunch (and it has cooled down) again drive for only a few hours and at variable speeds. Stop early for the night. By now you have at least several hundred miles pretty much as they recommend. Now just drive it the second day.

I picked mine up 300 miles from home and did this pretty much. Only thing I added to it was a oil change at 1000-1500 miles or so.

Dibbeena - RDGrimes mostly covered it. I would add the general recommendation that you keep your top-end travel speed at no faster than 65 MPG during the Break In Period. Recognize that you are not just breaking in the ICE, but also the transmission and power train.

Since you will be traveling on Interstate I-5 mostly the whole way, this may be challenge for you if you normally like to travel at the Max Posted Interstate Speed Limit or Max Posted Plus A Few More.

Do us Prius Borgs here on PriusChat a favor. Top-Off your Gas Tank before the trip and reset the Trip A or B. Keep a good trip log and share a narrative of the trip and the details of your travel profile, driving technique, and LA-To-Vancover (i.e. "Up Hill" During Break In). Do the same thing on the return trip (i.e. "Down Hill," Post Break In) so you can report a comparo of Average MPGs. on the trip up versus the trip back.

FWIW FYI: Driving my Post Break-In Period Prius v(vee), my normal Interstate ECC cruise set speed is set at the "$weet $pot" of 66 MPG (Max Posted Interstate Speed Limit 70 MPH). This usually delivers Per Tank-Full MPGs in the upper 40s MPGs for travel that is 99%-ish Interstate/Freeway "Highway" travel (i.e. 115% to 120% of Official EPA "Highway" Fuel Economy).

Have a safe trip, and be careful of the "Crazies" out there on the road who tend to see RED when they see the Prius nameplate.
