Does anyone have any experience with replacing the main hybrid battery with a used or rebuilt one? Ive seen them on ebay for around 1k to 1500. If you buy one of those would you get a repair shop mechanic to install it?

We have a 2010 prius we really like. We have access to an older prius with a bad battery (but otherwise good condition) for a pretty reasonable price. Considering buying it for our son in college and replacing the battery pack if it can be done for a reasonable price.

make sure it's only the battery that needs replacing, otherwise, it could get expensive.

"An older Prius" battery pack may be different enough you can't use it. They are not all the same, changing with each "generation". The 2010 would need a third gen. pack, from a 2010 to 2013 model. Further, you can't use a Prius C pack in a standard Prius Hatchback.

The pack is easy to replace. Anybody with basic mechanical knowledge can do it. It just involves unplugging the cable, unbolting the "box", removing it and putting in the replacement.

Do keep in mind any used battery you buy is not necessarily usable. It could also be bad.

You would do well to consult and perhaps hire a Prius specialist. There are several across the US.
