SHOULD I have navigation?

    Just bought my first Prius - Yay! 2004.
    There is a Navigation button on the dash as well as on the steering wheel but the navigation does not work. I'm the 3rd owner, the person I bought it from got it 2 years ago and said that the navigation never worked for them.
    When I go to navigation I get the current GPS coordinates on the top left, but a blank screen. If I plug in my address it shows a map of the streets around my house and maps my house, but no routing info. It constantly says that I am 600 or so miles from my destination, but the map screen is blank.
    Does the fact that navigation appears on the screen & steering wheel mean that the car did, at one time, have navigation? Included with the owners manual was a navigation manual and a navigation quick start guide, so I believe it did at one time have navigation.
    No idea what options package it has.

    Have you tried Calibrating it?

    From any screen on the dash screen press "Menu", then select "Setup".
    Once you are here scroll down and at the very bottom should be "Calibration". Click "Adjust" then select "Position/Direction". Then move using the arrows to your current position. Zoom in or out as necessary to make it as accurate as possible.

    Maybe there is no nav disk in the drive in the glove box? Im not sure what happens when there is no nav disk but maybe this?

    Also, is there a box under either the passenger seat or driver seat with NAVIGATION written on it? if not, then the previous owner yanked it and sold it.

    Does your car also have the JBL system?

    Nav in 2004 means top of the line. You've probably got fog lights, alarm, maybe extra air bags, maybe rearview mirror with garage door opener.

    My guess is that the GPS is set up for a different area of the country. In my 2006 (2004 is a bit different, but probably close enough), press the DEST button. On the right side there is a map of the US with the currently active area highlighted. If that's not where you are, press the CHANGE message to select where you are. If the area is wrong, then the time zone may also be wrong. Time zone is probably in INFO, SETTINGS, page 2 (?).

    Calibration worked - Thanks guys!
    The car was originally from CA. The second owner (the guy I bought it from locally) told me that the Navi never worked for him. The DVD player is under the drivers seat.
    When I started the calibration it was centered in the ocean off the coast of CA! Brought it "home" and now Navi works!
    I do have fog lights, JBLs everywhere, extra air bags, leather, etc. Nicest car I've ever owned!
    I LOVE THIS CAR!
    Now I have to figure out how to make the garage door opener on the mirror work...
    :)

    Yay! I'm glad it worked for you. Hopefully you don't have to do that again for a long while. I've had mine about three months and it hasn't changed at all. So if its constantly needing to be calibrated definitely get it check out.

    It generally only needs to be calibrated if it was transported large distances when powered off, like on a delivery truck. The Prius uses GPS and vehicle speed sensors to coorleate the data. This is why in tunnels and urban areas with skyscrapers (or dense forests) where GPS signals are sporadic at best it maintains a good speed lock and keeps you ontrack whereas your phone and handheld units stop updating the map when the signal goes away. If these get too far out of sync, you have to re-calibrate. There are other reasons too like a dead auxilliary battery at some point in the car's life and things like that.

    I figured out that the "correct" answer to my question of "Should I have Navigation" is:
    Is there a Navi DVD player in the car.
    Once I located it under the drivers seat I knew that I should and so did the calibration.
    No idea why the Navi calibration showed me located in the ocean of So CA ... this does explain why the navi screen was blank, showing no roads, even though when I entered my address it was able to map my neighborhood. (But it always showed that my destination was roughly 600 miles away!)
    Probably happened when a previous owners battery died.
    I've only had the car for a little over 2 weeks and got such a great price (partially because Navi did not work), I'm almost tempted to email the seller to let him know! Probably should not, he just bought a 2013 Prius so I'm sure he's happy.
    Dang, I really got a great deal! So happy!

    Not true!
    I use "Star Maps" on my iPhone when camping. As long as I keep the phone on it accurately records my position even though I am out of cell range.
    But then iPhones work on "magic" much like the Prius!
