I'm in the market for a car and have been gravitating towards buying a used Prius. From what I've researched, it seems that there are several available in my area (upstate NY) for under $10k. Generally these are '05-'07 models with around 100k miles.

The wrinkle: I will be in Los Angeles to study for the fall semester (Aug-Dec) and am beginning to consider purchasing a Prius once I get there. My primary reason for considering this is that it would let me skip having to drive it both ways across the country, saving me some hassle.

So to break it into questions:

    1) Is the market for used Prii in my price range much different between upstate NY and LA? Considering model year, difficulty in finding one, etc.

    2) What's the feasibility of driving a 100k+ Prius across the country and back?

    3) Am I correct that NY and CA both have a 10yr/150k mile manufacturer's warranty on the battery?

    4) Is there anything else I'm not thinking of?

    Thanks in advance!

I would recommend purchasing the Prius in LA. Don't quote me on this, but,, The NY Prius might not meet the emission requirements the climate change state of Calif requires.

you can google a list of carb states. if newyork is (and i think it is) then you get the california warranty. la could potentially be more expensive than new york because they are more popular in cali. driving a just purchased car across country would give me cause for concern if i couldn't afford the potential time and cost of repairs.

I would also consider a SoCal car better since we don't have winters and salt down here.
