I've had the PIP for about 3 months and I'm very happy. Question: I have a long highway commute and I have about 8 miles of the EV range remaining once I get on the highway and switch to ECO mode. There is a large hill that allows me to regenerate about 1.5 miles of EV range bringing my range up to approximately 9.5 miles, as I continue on the flat highway in ECO mode my range slowly drops back down to eight miles over the next five or ten minutes. Is this normal?
I think I know what you are saying. Once you get on the highway and switch to HV mode and the EV miles continue to drop down to 8 miles right? That's the behavior I noticed too. A fully charged battery is 85% full. Once you switch into HV mode, PiP will only keep a comfortable 70-75% of the charge. That's probably 8 miles mark for you. A few reason for doing that. 1) Create room for regen brake 2) Battery pack can absorb max power. It recharges at slower rate as it approach full (85%) 2) Prolong battery life
It might be trying to maintain the EV miles that you had when you switched to HV mode. You might try staying in EV mode until you get to the bottom of the hill and picked up the extra 1.5 miles.
Do you "need" the extra EV miles later? If not, don't worry, you got higher gas mpg during that time. Mike
Yes it's normal. Once you press the ev button to put you in hv mode, you lock in whatever ev miles you have left. If you want to save the extra 1.5mi you gained, toggle the ev button on and back off again to lock in your new miles.
