I drag race AND love better mpgs. On over half my cars a home made CAI got better economy and performance than the stock set up and a few others were worse mpgs and performance. I have not tried one on the wifes 2011 Prius...and won't until the warranty is up. Then I will try a low buck and simple set up to see what happens. My old 98 and older 95 neons picked up nearly 3 mpg at 55 and about 5 hp (I don't believe in 10 hp unless the original set up was over 500 hp to start with. The old 96 3 banger Geo LOST 2 mpg and about 3 hp!

On my old 282 HP 96 Porsche 993 with K&N, no HP gain with G-tech pro. Modified RSCS airbox which is same as the cold air intake, no HP gain. Actually made less power because it was sucking in more hot air. I actually had to convert back and add a snorkel to get more cold air. I wrote a thing about it years ago... Here IAT

2012 555 HP BMW X5M K&N filters no HP gain.

FWIW, a 1996 Porsche 911 turbo makes 400 HP, uses the same air filter as the NA 993 of the same year. So that's what convinced me that if the air filter was good to make 400HP what's the problem?

In my opinion, the answer to the original question is YES. It is both good and bad. will it void your warranty? only if it can be proven that the modification created the issue. does it add 10 more hp? probably not but I am looking for a bridge to buy in case I get the urge to blow one up. Does it increase the WOW factor? very much so, I think, when someone pops the hood on a hybrid only to find something you see on a tuners car. Its not what is typically seen. Coming over from the Scion crowd we are all about individuality and making each Scion it's own. Why should Prius be any different? I have been modding my cars since I was 16 and my new Prius C will be no exception. I don't care what your opinion is about my car--- it's my car. If you want to add a CAI, by all means do it. Just don't expect everybody to like it or expect it to run like a Supra Turbo. It's your car, do what you want.

Every time we took our Pri to the the dealership for the free oil change, One of the Tech guys always came out and said how great it looked and wanted to know how the sound/performance changed.

Hahaha...I've been on Honda, BMW, and many other auto forums.

Each time, someone ask whether adding a CAI is worth it, there's always some stupid idiot post the same response "If [insert manufacture here] could get better gas milage/performance/etc they would."

Its such a crack up to me when people try to hop up a engine that doesnt even run all the time. If it looks $200 better to you, buy it. The VERY best you could hope for performance wise is that it runs the same and not worse.
