Traction Battery Health Monitor for Toyota Prius

welcome! could be a loss of mpg's, or you might notice the battery meter acting erratically. but before you blame the hybrid battery, you want to check/replace the 12v as it has a mysterious effect on many different operations of the vehicle.

 

I received my Can Log device from OpenElectrons.com. I plugged it in the OBDII connector and made a couple of trips on Sunday. I checked the Micro SD card and saw a new file created. I checked the file and it had ZVW# and a couple of other pieces of data but no battery data.

I contacted Nitin at [email protected] and he stated that this was due to being a 2010 ZVW30 and he would have to send me some additional files. Evidently I was the first Gen III beta tester. I downloaded the file and this time I had a new file full of hex data. He sent me a second file which I downloaded and drove to work this morning.

Nitin was saying that it would take a few iterations to get the data storing correctly for the Gen III. I will keep updating this site with our progress. I look forward to monitoring and storing the HV battery health data.

Nitin has my PriLog working very well now. Find attached a log file of my morning commute to work. For reference the outside temp was about 43F. A description of my commute is:

• 3 blocks - residential neighborhood at 25 mph
• 5 miles - main boulevard at 45-50 mph with stop lights
• 20 miles - highway at 60 mph with CC
• 1 mile - 45 mph in to work parking lot.

Data info:

• Vb1 = millivolts : 15983 = 15.983V
• Rb1 = milliohms : 24 = 0.024 ohms
• Temperatures = degrees C

I have monitored all of this data at one time or the other with SGII XGauges but only 4 at a time. It is really nice to see this much data at sample intervals and see how the battery management ECU responds to current flow and SOC changes. My car has 53k miles so I have a very good record of what my HV battery looks like operating normally. I plan to gather another log file the first time it gets below freezing. I am really looking forward to next summer in 95F weather especially after the car has been parked in an open asphalt parking lot all day !!

Once these devices become available I would highly recommend getting one to record your data. This is the very information that you would pay a Toyota dealer a $100 diagnostic fee to hook up their Techstream and give you a report.

It is very simple to use. Connect to your OBDII port with car off. A yellow led will begin to blink. Start the car and a red led will blink indicating that it is uploading data. Each time you stop and start the car it will open another log file. Remove the device, slide back the Micro SD card holder and remove the module, insert the SD module in a SD card reader to view and save PriLog text file. I have cut and paste my text file into an Excel spreadsheet in order to view better, make calculations, create trends, etc.

Thanks for making this neat little gadget available. Mine came ready to go with a 2GB card already installed. Thanks also for shipping to Germany.

I noticed that there seems to be no link or chain of links from your home page to the CanLog ordering page. Apparently only Priuschat readers can find it from this thread.

After I ordered, I was away for a couple weeks, so I have only been testing during the last week. I noticed that the log times are not in regular intervals. The intervals seem to vary randomly mostly between three and twenty seconds; sometimes longer. For me that is no problem. It has no effect on my analysis of the data, but perhaps it should be mentioned in the users guide just to avoid potential confusion for new users.

Below is my latest log file. On that trip I tested nearly the full SOC operating range of the battery by driving in EV as long as possible, then driving up a hill, force charging, and driving downhill to charge as much as I could.

Will this data logger work on both gen2 and gen3 cars? How about running a special for us and I will give it a try. It looks like a fun gadget.

 

Do you also log the HV battery current at the time of the module pair (not cell) voltages (14 module pairs in a Gen2 or Gen3).

Just wanted to let you know that I just used my Traction Battery Health Montior yesterday to check battery condition now that we are in the 90's and my car sits in an open asphalt parking lot all day.

It was comforting to see that my battery is holding up well in this NC July heat. I graphed all 14 of the battery module pair voltages during the trip to and from work and they all tracked very nicely.

Even though the inside of the car was like 113F and the battery starting temps were around 97F, once I got on the highway and the AC cooled down the interior the battery fan did a good job of stabilizing the battery temps and actually dropped the temps from a high of about 104F down to about 95F. By the time I drove through the city traffic to the house the battery temps only rose back up to about 104F, which is about where it would get to when the temps were in the 80's.

This is an excellent device to have for peace of mind about the battery health with the car being 3.5 years old and 63k miles. I have some good historical data to compare as the car and the battery continues to age.
