Given the limited infrastructure, hard to imagine why anyone would buy an EV and depend on public charging facilities. I'd say the same for LNG and Hydrogen powered vehicles. A risky bet on availability.

In NY if you depend on public charge stations- I'm afraid you'll be taking a bus home every so often :(

I tend to agree. I bought the LEAF knowing that my work commute and many of our weekend jaunts would fit easily into its range, and we also have another vehicle for long-range trips. Over 95% of my charging has been done right at home and that is the use case I bought it for. The availability of public charging in this area is nice but I did not count on it when evaluating the car. I have made a few longer trips but thanks to a fairly good coverage of public charging in this region I haven't been dependent on any particular charger; there are mutliple alternates should I encounter an occupied, blocked or broken one.

Plugin hybrids and BEVs both serve particular wants and needs. Vive le différence.

Tesla is way past that. In a year, you'll be able to go almost anywhere in the US using a Tesla Model S/X. I believe I read somewhere that Tesla is even open to licensing some of the tech down the road. Between that, and the fact that the supercharging protocol can work with CHAdeMO stations (Tesla is considering building an adapter for Japan customers), I really think Tesla's tech is a lot more than 'betamax'.

Yes I could of just called a cop but I was trying to get the OP to understand that:

    1. He can't park in a DCQC spot since his car is unable to plugin to a QC
    2. The sign shows were he can charge
But he would not let me talk, I would start to tell him then he would jump in and talk over me.
I was calm the OP was the one having a fit as he kept yelling "I'm electric I'm electric Look Look Plug".

So I just hope he learns from his mistake and lies.

We'll see. Nothing Tesla is doing (including its P/E) is being done without subsidies that are at present a multiple of revenue. At some point, the taxpayer refuses to deliver more subsidy (arguably should already have refused) and the P/E multiple craters along with the wow factor.

Not much better in NJ. That's probably why I see just the same one Leaf.

Some people including myself would like to see the government investing in better technology. Lots of the great breakthroughs were government funded in the beginning or had major core pieces funded by the government. I will gladly keep paying taxes so that Tesla and other companies pump out greener tech. That includes Solyndra that anti-tax idiots love to bash. Not everything is a winner, but you have to pay to play.

I'm guessing the same goes here too- If you take a serious look at public EV charging- you quickly realize it's just not dependable and helps you decide against a pure EV.
I've only seen one Leaf here in the past 1.5 years. The day after Super-Storm Sandy hit last October- he was charging at the court complex where I charge every morning. He said the electricity was out on his block so he came here to charge. I felt bad for the guy as it's only a L2 charger and he had already been sitting in his car for 2hrs since 6:30am waiting for his charge to finish.

I have no problem with government investing taxpayer proceeds in technology development, but it should not extend to massive subsidies for commercialization, unless those subsidies go directly to the end user in the form of tax preference buy-downs.

And even with that said, Musk should succeed or fail on a much lower ratio of ongoing subsidy to revenue than the present 4 to 5:1 -- the subsidy:revenue ratio ought to be reversed to 1:5 if not far smaller. Mickey Mouse could build cars with that sort of a leg up, and Fisker tried.

Like that 1970's ARPANET project from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency that evolved into the Internet. And yes, Al Gore did have something to do with this, albeit late in the game, and from the Congressional funding perspective, not the technical perspective. :) As a graduate student, I used ARPANET, accessing the portal over a dialup modem. Mostly file transfer and (text) e-mail.

I see Leafs (sometimes multiple ones) in my area almost everyday. There is a Leaf owner/lessee (don't know him) about a block away on the street attached to mine.

When I finally start working again next week, I suspect I'll see multiple ones each day.

I will agree that depending on public charging for daily or almost daily usage when owning a BEV is a bad idea. One pretty much needs to be able to charge at home. The only exception might be a guarantee of charging at work/daily destinations. Some places provide free workplace charging.

Yup. Imagine if the repubs of the day blocked the development of ARPANET. Computers were extremely expensive and networking multiple computers was even more so.

The accelerometer in your phone, laptop, car, video game consoles, and everything else was made for missile guidance systems. The modern semiconductor was funded by the government around post-WWII almost entirely by funding both Fairchild and TI. And then Intel. GPS of course again for missiles.

The NSF funded things like clean water purification, barcodes, and even Google. NASA did everything from fire resistant clothing, the ballpoint pen, semi-truck design, baby forumla, long lasting tires, and lots more. DARPA also did wind farms, motion detection, the list goes on.

So lots of the shiny things that consumers buy are made by private companies, but only because the tax payer has invested in technologies that make them possible.

If you take a normal cell phone today, the touchscreen, the microporcessor, the network chip, the accelerometer, the camera interface just to name a few things wouldn't be there without lots of help. And most of that help was just grants and raw money. Not loans to be repayed.

Well, that's the shame of it- NYC actually has a decent number of charge stations- but with no laws protecting them and parking spots being so scarce- they hardly get used because they're constantly ICE'd.

The need an illuminted sign that says: "Not Charging Parking Fine $200" that comes if the place is occupied an not plugged-in.

After one hour with less than say 5A., the sign reads "Charge Over Parking Fine $200"

    Problem solved.

OK, and who's going to pay to teach NYPD (police generally) about EVs, charging, metering?
