Removing the fuel filler neck for 2001 Prius?

    Have you considered the hypothesis that the bladder in the tank may have failed or a gasoline overfill might have put gasoline between the bladder and the metal tank?

    You are in an area where few of us have 'hands on' experience and in many ways, new territory.

    Hi Bob. My plan is to get to know the Prius in and out. I just picked up another Prius (2003) and did a preliminary test from the scan tool and it exhibited some similar results. Coincidence? So far on the 2001 I narrowed it down to the tank, ccv or filler neck. Have not had a chance to investigate further due to school...

    I'm planning to get a gen2 / gen3 to do a solar conversion (mainly because it can do higher speeds on electric).

    Just got my hands on a factory shop manual. I must say, the difference is night and day. The aftermarket manuals is ok for the very basic stuff, but fails on the details and misses a lot of critical stuff. The factory manual is something like 2000 pages for the 2001 Prius vs a few hundred pages on the aftermarket that tries to cover 2001-2008 models.

    Excellent! You are the type of owner perfect for the NHW11 Prius:
    • self-maintenance capable - this means you can turn a wrench and we can 'talk technical'
    • documentation - you probably meant the English language shop manual as I am sure the 'factory shop manual' is written in Japanese and not designed to support debug and repair (after all, the factory is defect free!)
    • enthusiasm - there are days when you look at all the problems and think . . . 'I'll get back to you' . . . enthusiasm comes and goes and when it is there . . . YEA!
    I'm sure the technical team that hangs here are looking forward to working with you.

    BTW, 'school'? What, where, and how far along? There is 'technical' and then there is engineer. <grins>

    I've recently finished my Technology Management concentration and just started on Project Management. Should be finished by the end of the year if everything goes without a hitch. :)

    Hi Lueung, What are the error codes you retrieved from the car? I've never seen a Gen1 with filler neck problems. I have complete good used fuel tanks available if you are near Colorado. Where are you located?

    BTW, while the Gen1 manuals are helpful, they are not definitive in solving problems. There are many Gen1 problems that say to fix X and the problem is often Y. (gen2-3 manuals and diagnostics are much better) The crowd on PriusChat has real world experience that in many cases will help you more than the gen1 manual, so please share your Gen1 issues in as much detail as possible.

    Thanks Paul. I am in NY. I was just curious as to see what the easiest way of removing it as it seems to be held by a seal and I thought I'd make an inquiry on here to see if anyone has done it.     Apparently I haven't referred to Toyota's manual for removing the filler neck as I just got it last night. hehe ;)

    I got code 440 this fall and found my 2001 prius (in Massachusetts all it's life) needs a new filler pipe (removing the rust exposed a hole). Will get a new filler pipe and install soon. I also have the 2001 Prius repair manuals from Toyota and they aren't that good at a lot of repairs -- when compared to earlier shop manuals I have owned.

    I'd second that. I have a stack of Honda manuals, on our first Toyota. Got a pdf of the manual, and was dismayed by the terse, cryptic style.

    I'm interested in this as well. The filler pipe looks to be easy to replace in that it's connected at the bottom to flexible hoses, but I haven't tried it yet. Challenge appears to be disconnecting it at the top where it goes through the rear fender. And it's not that uncommon it seems to have them rust out. See Tech is stumped.
