Off to the dark side

    Today we are trading in our 2006 Prius for a new Chevy Volt. We'll miss the Pri but want to experience an all electric commute, shopping trips, etc. The majority of our round trips are about 25 miles so the Volt's range is a good fit. It's been a fun run, but now we are excited to start the new venture. This is the first American car we've owned in 40 years. Hope it works out. For sure, the seats will be much more comfortable, we'll see about the rest. Thanks all here at Prius Chat for the tips and suggestions over the years. This is a great site!

    Not quite, unless you include the tax credit which we won't see til next year. This one is pretty tricked out so we are paying $35.5K ($42.6K sticker) now, or 27K after the tax credit.

    Yes, the base model would have worked out at $25K. They need to move these cars and lowering the price is the best incentive.

    The Chevy Volt isn't "The Dark Side"....it's a different side.

    I live in an apartment and rent, so charging is "problematic". But if I owned a house with a garage? I'd consider Volt, Leaf and PiP.

    Good Luck and enjoy the Volt. For the machine that it is, I do think they are currently a fantastic buy if you can afford it.

    Thanks for the good thoughts. I have to admit I'm more nervous getting this car then I was getting the Prius.

    these prices are incredible. i wonder how much a lease is? i wouldn't want to own one until they prove out long term. i hope gm has more success in the future, seems not many want plug ins, and they don't have much to fall back on except guzzlers.:(

    The Volt has been out a couple years now and has established a good track record. FWIW, when I bought the Prius, Edmunds and Consumer Reports were knocking the car. They were wrong and now have figured out that the Prius is a great car. The lease is whatever you negotiate, but I'm told GM is offering some very nice deals. Note that several GM cars get pretty decent mileage. We considered a Cruze which is a very nice car and can get great hwy mileage for a normal ICE. They just came out with a diesel that gets very good mileage too, about 46mpg average I think. On the highway I was getting 55mpg without any effort. It is noisy though.

    ahmeow, after owning the Prius for 7 years we will miss it. But the Volt is already proving more pleasurable. My back suffered badly with the Prius seats and the tech was feeling dated. The Volt is more comfortable, handles nicely and has a lot of perks. I absolutely love traveling on electric. It's quiet and the regen is great. The audio system also rocks. Hopefully the experience will grow and be good.

    Not the dark side my friend, I went from a LEAF to a VOLT and finally traded our Pathfinder for a Prius V. The dark side would of been trading in a Prius for a Hummer. :LOL: The VOLT is an awesome car, one of my most favorite cars i've every owned. Click on my signature of the car for some "real world" MPG's. I have a long commute and burn less than a gallon a day. Keep her plugged in, charge as much as possible, even if its just on a 110v Wall Plug. And the investment into a 220/240V L2 EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supple Equipment, not called a charger, the charger is actually onboard on the vehicle that regulates the 3.3kWh charging rate) The VOLTEC is $499 but there is a new BOSCH and a few others around the $450-600 range. Feel free to msg/pm me and Ill be glad to shine some light on some good EVSE info. The faster the charge, the more EV/gas free miles, the better!
