IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE: KEY/FOB Programming Issues

I received my blank keyfob from Metro Toyota in the mail today. Then tried the above instructions to add the new key to my 2007 Prius with SKS. I had no luck with step 9 above as written. Tried it several times but kept getting the double unlock cycle that indicated the attempt was not successful.

However, I went back and read some prior instructions (including the pdf that was attached in the first post of this thread) and saw it had a slightly different step 9 that also involved using the old fob. Substituted in those steps and it worked the first time.

So my step 9 that worked was as follows:

9a: Press the lock key on the OLD fob. A couple of seconds passed and the locks cycled once. (edit: To be honest I can't remember now if I just hit the lock button alone or the lock & unlock at the same time. If the first attempt using just lock doesn't work, try again holding both.)

9b: Pressed both the Lock and Unlock key on the NEW fob at the same time. Held for about 1.5 seconds.

9c: Waited about three seconds then pressed the lock key on the NEW fob. Then got the lock/unlock cycle once indicating success.

After that, everything including SKS worked fine.

 

I updated my post (post #88) to reflect your experience. Thank you Jason for the help. I'm hoping the procedure in post #88 is now 100% correct and foolproof.

If anyone is trying to do this, please let us know how it works. I eventually want to recommend this as a sticky to the mods but, I want to get it right first.

 

Does your key work when you plug it into the slot in the dash?

 

Well, dang... no it doesn't. I never even thought to try it since starting it via SKS and the fob lock/unlock buttons worked.

However, I just did this additional procedure from early on in the thread and that fixed it so it now also works when I plug it into the dash. So now everything, SKS, lock/unlock and key-in-slot, works.

Again, this is in addition to the chicken-dance I did a few posts above that got SKS and lock/unlock to work. It's best to do this as well so you can start the car if the battery in the fob dies and SKS doesn't work.

Start/stop engine (NO CHANGES over previous posts)

1. Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on.
4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
5. Remove the new fob and you're done.

 

Ok, good. I was just making sure you did both procedures to get all functions working (including plugging it in). Did you take a look at my post #88? Does that look good?

 

I wanted to post a quick thank you to all who brought these instructions to the net and saved me $160 - $200 (2 local dealers quoted me $310 and $350 respectively for a programmed replacement key). I bought my unprogrammed silver logo key from Metro Toyota via eBay ($150 + $5 s/h), learned the chicken dance I (it did take me a couple of tries to get it right; practice makes perfect), and now I have a fully functional smart entry/smart start remote -- I can unlock doors and start the car without having to take the key out of my pocket. For my 2004 Prius, the first version of the dance (the version that does not involve pressing buttons on the old remote during step 9) was successful.

 

Thank you for updating us MrMrPrius. I was certain that pressing the buttons on the old remote was not necessary on mine either but, I have an 06.
JasonATX has an 07 so maybe something has changed after 06. I'm hoping to gather more info and make this procedure 100% fool proof.

Once again, thank you for updating us. If anyone uses this procedure in the future, please post your results and advise us/me as to which parts of step 9 were required.

 

I tried this several times on my 2006 using the second set of instructions and when I reach step 9c, I get either no response from the car or 4 lock/unlock transitions. I wonder if the timing in step 9b needs to be more accurate than I am executing.

There is also some history that should be mentioned. I originally bought this fob a while ago from an online Toyota dealer and my independent Toyota mechanic tried to activate it. He managed to get the unlock-while-in-the-slot function working but not the remote/SKS so something else might be getting in the way of successful programming.

Any insight before I buy a new fob will be greatly appreciated.

Since you are in the SF bay area, get ahold of Prius Chat member "ovni". He should be able to help you. He is much more knowledgeable than I on these matters.

My thoughts are that the first attempt by the "independent Toyota mech" may have limited the "chicken dances" ability to work but I'm no expert. I'm just someone who's trying to get this right for others.

 

Quick follow-up on my SKS programming experience (while it's still somewhat fresh in my head) that might be helpful:

First - let me emphasize that it's better to be a little on the slow side when pressing the fob's lock button after pressing the unlock button, rather than risk pressing both buttons too closely together; where the instructions say 'a millisecond', it's really more than that (but less than a full second); imagine drumming your fingers on your desk, try to match the time between two fingers - there's a distinct instant when one is down and the other isn't.
Second - be sure to keep holding both buttons for the stated 1.5 seconds. The car's lock-unlock response is *not* instantaneous; it seems to 'think about it' for a couple seconds before giving you the lock-unlock success signal. (I'm a little fuzzy on whether the car's delay comes after the 9a double-button press or after the 9b single-button press of just the lock button.)

Finally, I wonder if one of the knowledgeable regulars can clarify whether the *fob* is modified (i.e. some kind of security codes are written/transmitted *into* the *fob* from the *car*) by both the fob-in-slot procedure and the SKS procedure? Do both procedures require a virgin fob? Can a *used* fob be used for one but not the other?

 

I wanted to confirm that the chicken dance will only add remotes and not remove lost remotes.

Ideally I could remove my lost remote but I believe it requires Techstream or dealer programming.

Edit part 2: I just noticed in the PDF instructions there is the description of a mode "Delete mode: Remove all keys except the master key. Use if a key is lost.". I also found the source Word document but since I'm green I can't post it directly: priuschat dott com slashh attachments slashh prius_smartkey_programming-doc.5401 slashh . It has more information than the PDF. I still need to digest all of the info since there are directions to delete in two modes: Smart Entry and registration modes.

Has anyone tried the delete instructions for either mode? What would be the correct procedure, with a master key, to delete a lost key and add a new key?

 

I just revisited this thread after a couple of months.
I tried the "update" (9a: Press the lock key on the OLD fob)...but still no luck.

Has anyone been successful on a 2009 Gen 2?

Yes, I have a 2009 Gen2 and was able to get it to work after a few tries.

The only conclusion I can come to on your situation is that the fob you bought is either a factory reject or someone previously tried to program it. I really hate to say that to you but, I cannot think of any other explanation.

The only thing I can suggest for you is to get ahold of "ovni" or buy a new fob from a dealer.

Just had my Locksmith/Roomy cut a couple new 01 & 02 Prius keys. 2 for the 02, One was fairly EZ to Program on the 02 based on the Programing inst. was pretty simple. But the second is difficult to program.

And, the one key for the 01 has been attempted several times with no programing luck. What would you recommend?

Key Programing Inst. from one of my Toyota Shop Friends.

YOU MUST HAVE A PRE-REGISTERED MASTER KEY TO OPEN THE PROGRAMMING MODE.

1. Begin by sitting in the driver seat with all the doors shut.
2. Insert your working master (black) key in the ignition.
3. Very Quickly, turn the key from "LOCK" to "ON" 5 times. (You will end with the key in the "LOCK" position)
4. Immediately, open and close the driver door 6 times very quickly. (End with the door closed)
5. Immediately, remove your working Master Key and insert your new Master Key
6. Turn the key to the "ON" position and leave it there while you wait for 1 minute.
7. After the minute, if you want to program another key, just remove the first one and insert the next one, turning it to "ON" and leaving it in position for 1 minute.
8. When you are through programming keys, just take the last one out, open and then close the driver door to lock in the programming, and your done.

I have been reading the forum posts for programming the smart key fob. I ordered a silver logo new, unused fob which I have yet to receive. Since ordering the fob, I have come across posts mentioning that the FCC ID must match the existing fob in order to successfully program the new fob. The fob I ordered has the silver Toyota emblem on the back but is FCC ID-HYQ14ACX which I read is for the later model Prius. Should I order a different fob? If so, can anyone tell me the part number for a 2005 smart key fob?

I just ordered a 2nd gen Prius (2004-2009) P/N 89994-47061 remote with FCC ID MOZB31EG. This matches my 2007 remote.

From Google, FCC ID yours appears to be 3rd gen Prius (2010-present?). P/N 89904-60061.

I'm off to do the chicken dance!

Post #88 instructions worked! (2nd gen Prius 2007) with a new unregistered key from Griffith Toyota via Ebay.

I tried to follow the doc delete instructions for both start/stop and smart entry but I could never get either a clear response that the delete was successful or it flat never went into a delete mode:

Another victory for the Post #88 chicken dance. It worked on a new fob that I ordered from Metro Toyota in Cleveland, so I now have two fully functional SKS keys for my 2006.
