2013 base clearwater blue (lovely color) bought: may 2013 1000 miles so far ev ratio (but I am skeptical as to the true meaning/value of this) 33% mileage on first and only full tank: 722 miles, 8.6 galls, 83 mpg. I forget if high altitude (always above 9000 ft) has an effect on an auto's mpg. It does in the sense that it is always a little cooler up here. issues: just the fact that the engine warms up unnecessarily on trips of less than 5 miles.
my ice never comes on in ev, is it due to extreme cold up there, or long initial decents? ev ratio is based on miles in ev, what's not to trust?
Only if you accelerate hard or turn on the heater. On my morning commute taking the river route, I routinely drive the entire capacity in EV with a cold engine. That includes a variety of starts & stops, a bit of hill climbing, and some cruising at 55 mph.

From the Prius Plug-in FAQ Why is ICE turning on when there's still battery left? There are any number of factors that can cause this. The manual outlines them on page 40: ●The heater etc. is in use. ●The temperature of the hybrid system is high: The vehicle has been left in the sun, driven on a hill, driven at high speeds, etc. ●The temperature of the hybrid system is low: The vehicle has been left in temperatures lower than about 32°F (0°C) for a long period of time etc. ●Power is needed temporarily, for example when accelerating suddenly. ●Vehicle speed is more than approximately 62 mph (100 km/h). ●The accelerator pedal is depressed firmly or the vehicle is on a hill etc. ●The outside temperature is low (less than 14°F [-10°C]) Bullet points 4 & 6 refer to accelerating so hard that the HSI progress bar reaches into the PWR zone. Tradeoffs are part of engineering. You want to increase the tolerance on something, that means something else must be decreased. How much of what would you want changed? Look at what Ford did for comparison. Cargo space and engine efficiency was traded for the sake of increased range & power.
Under what conditions does that happen for you? This happens for me only when going downhill with a full charge and using the brake. I can generally avoid that situation.

I can generally avoid it as well but it would be much nicer if I didn't have to. There should be a button labeled: "I don't want ICE. Really, I don't need more power when I accidently step on the pedal too hard."
Sometimes its my fault - stepping on the gas too hard to get across an intersection, don't turn the auto temp down far enough to keep the heat from running, etc. Other times it just seems to be spontaneous, or to be reacting to what I consider normal acceleration. I have a 3.5 mile flat commute with a lot of lights (I know, rough, right?!). For whatever reason, I seem to be able to avoid it in the morning but coming back in the evening it often kicks on for no apparent reason, sometimes even after just coming out of the parking garage. Yes I know it has to run every so often, but this seems more often than need be. As mmmodem suggested, I'd prefer not to have to baby it so much. Seems like it could be a little less aggressive about coming on for heating and acceleration.
You just need to look at the HSI display that shows how the car is responding to the gas pedal. Keep it out of the PWR area and there should be no problem. Also if you use the ECO mode the gas pedal is less responsive to the amount you depress it making it easier to stay out of the PWR range.
