Anyone else find themselves almost hoping the gas will go up since you own one of the most fuel efficient (usable) cars in existance? My friends are always trying to give me grief about how I paid to much and it's not worth it bla bla bla. I just hope gas hits like $4 a gallon so I can laugh at all of them with thier 25mpg sedans. I'll have to pay more, sure, but they'll pay far more than me.

They will go higher, it's simply a question of how long it takes. If they go high sooner it may be a good thing for the long term because it's the only thing that causes people to conserve. I would think $4 or even $5 a gallon would get rid of a lot of SUVs and cause some serious alternative fuels research.

But what are we really trying to accomplish? It seems we are engaged in an experiment to see how many people will fit on the surface of the earth and see how fast we can use up everything anyway. So stretching out the oil supplies for a few more years may not matter that much anyway.

If they find a way to cap oil company profits so the price-hikes (supposedly) due to weather and terrorism don't end up setting profit records again, gas shouldn't get to $4 a gallon without a major disaster.

Reality being what it is, gas will find its way to $4 relatively soon and I will be too busy thinking about what I used to do with money instead of pay for gas to worry what people getting lower MPGs than me are doing...

What would be the price point for riots to break out?

    Let's go watch "Soylent Green"

Other riots to look forward: when TV goes High Def only in 2009. Riots b/c not that people don't have a high def set but b/c when high def signal gets low it does not ghost or snow but no picture or sound at all, totaly unwatchable.

    Any other riot possibilities?

I don't have a Prius but even if I did, I wouldn't want gas prices to up! I remember back when 87 octane only cost 99 cents a gallon!

For a brief period of time after I first pulled the trigger to buy and was waiting to take delivery, I was annoyed watching the price of gas fall.

Then I realized that no matter how you cut it, no matter what your efficiency is, higher prices means less money for you and me. Even if we walked to work and didn't own a car, higer gas prices takes money out of my wallet one way or another.

And besides... our other vehicle is a minivan (ouch).

Well the good thing with gas prices going higher is that it makes alternative fuels more and more affordable and it will at some make companies invest into alternative energy sources as they would be profitable.

At some point in time it will have to happen as gasoline is limited resource. I think it would almost certain be good for the environment when it happens.

I was reading in an article at boston.com that e85 would be economical if gas hits $2.50. We are close now. I'm not convinced yet that e85 is a good step but if gas prices come up and stays over $3.00 then e85 might get attractive for fleets etc.

Same here. Besides, on one of the Yahoo groups someone told the story of how they went out to their Prius to go to work and found both tires on the driver's side flat. He went around to the passenger's side and found the guy letting air out of a tire. It turns out that the Prius owner was a cop and was able to stop the guy without any problem. The reason the guy was letting air out of the tires was that he was angry about having to pay so much to fill his tank, so he decided to take it out on a smug Prius owner. The owner threatened to arrest him for damage (mainly to put a little fear into the guy), but in the end merely made him refill the tires. :)

I wouldn't want someone to do something like that (or worse) to my Prius just because it costs them so much to fill up their vehicle.

I don't want to see gas prices go higher, even when I do get a hybrid. I would rather save money whether I need a hybrid or not. If it does go up I'm getting a team of hamsters to pull me on a bicycle. Now you don't want to see those cute furry creatures abused like that do you? No, I didn't think so, so don't wish for higher gas prices.

On the other side of things, higher gas prices mean higher oil prices which means....gasp, higher prices on everything including heating some of your homes. There are plenty of families out there that can't afford to replace their heating or energy system with the newest and efficient technologies. Think of the people living in the colder climates who live in old homes. Their heating costs this winter were terrible even though it has been a mild winter so far for most people. These same people have to put food on the table. Sure they could go to a corn stove but for some that's even difficult if not impossible.

I know it was a shot at the gas guzzlers, but the result of getting a few with money for excess will eventually punish those who barely make ends meet as it is.

gas is like cigarettes. People will still consume the same amount no matter what the price is. I know people that, when money is tight, would rather lose phone service before internet, cable, or cigarettes. This is true even whe the phone is the cheapest of the four!

When gas hits $4 a gallon, we'll have more economic troubles than simply being able to pay for a tank of gas.

We'll ALL be complaining about how much everything costs since someone has to pay for the additional cost of trucking, manufacturing, and distribution of power to our homes.

Being able to say "I told you so" just won't cut it at that point.

Take some of the gas guzzling tax and spend it on home improvement subsidy.

I looked over my family's CO2 consumption: Our home consumes THREE times as much as the Prius. Ughhh. I've taken to throwing cold water on my daughter after ten minutes in the shower.

    Your poor kid!

Watched my two nieces get ready for (high) school. They used all the hot water, spent 30 minutes on the blow dryer and used half a can of hair spray. One refused to put more than $5 of gas in her car, about three gallons. Her father complained about having to replace her car's fuel tank because of rust inside the tank.

Gotta agree with you. Many of the SUV drivers I know could afford to drive their vehicles even if gas prices top $10/gallon. It's the poor and those just above the poverty line who will suffer the most.

Somehow I think corporate america will provide adequate infrastructure to maintain that pipeline into your brain. Oops, I meant into your living room.

sure why not? Go up for two weeks, let my friends pump with the high price, when it goes back down, I'll refuel. Now you guys know why range matters hehe. We can last til the next price drop, the others can't.
