Great forum! I just bought a 2013 Prius four last Friday. Got a great deal and have walked away from my BMW. I commute about 100 miles round trip daily. So impressed with this car. I have tried multiple ways to and from work. Yesterday I did back roads and the distance was 8 miles shorter each way than highway. I got 58.2 mpg on the way home! Today I did highway. It does go through a couple small towns, but I set cruise at 65mph. I got 55.1mpg! I love this car!
Others can suggest a Prius, but you have to experience it yourself. I've given up explaining my rationale.
Congrats on the car and glad you like it. It is truly an amazing vehicle. Your commute sounds like mine. One day you may hit the 60's and then you'll be disappointed at 55! ;-)
The Prius is usually optimistic about mpg by 10% or so. Don't be surprised that it is a little lower when you fill up and do the real calculation.
One thing I like about this car I am getting ( 40's & 50's ) MPG in the city, What I would almost get with my Diesel on the Highway. To stay in the 40's all the time is great! Plus I am paying 20 to 50 cent less per gallon of fuel.
I've had my Prius for 2 1/2 weeks now...love it. I'm averaging approx 52 miles per gallon in all types of traffic, from stop and go, to steady highway driving. My commute is 50 miles round trip, and my previous car got about 22-25 miles per gallon max, using premium fuel, so the cost savings in the Prius is tremendous. I have the Solar/moonroof package, so I also have the premium HDD Navigation system. The large split screen nav display is wonderful. Being the engineering geek that I am, I love all the geeky technology in the Prius. The car rides well, and I'm itching to go on another long road trip Have fun with this technological masterpiece!
What did your BMW get (MPG wise) on similar trips? Another pleasant surprise is in store for you when you replace your tires 2 years from now. A full set of tires < $600, as opposed to $1000 - $1200 (or more!).
Welcome to the Prius addiction Careful about catching the Mod Bug as there are a ton of aftermarket parts available for any model Prius. he he he Mike Mobile on my SGH-i717
BMW said it got 28mpg. Manual calc was more like 26. Take into account that I had racked up 125k and the repair costs and premium fuel, and the prius costs me nothing. I'm actually saving about 40 bucks a month with the Prius and its not 7 years old (also not as fun in the turns, but gotta grow up sometime).
I too went from my 2009 BMW 335xi to a prius a month ago. Doing 60 miles a day round trip in a twin turbo that gets ~20 mi/gal to something that does 55+ mpg. I cut my gas bill in half, that's about 250 bucks a month saved. Love the Prius, wish I'd switch over earlier.
I think you're going too easy on your BMW. It takes premium. You should be cutting your gas bills by 2/3.
Welcome. Careful with cruise control it can hurt you if you are trying for max mpg...enjoy your car..welcome to the madness
Another BMW to Prius driver here. I picked up the Prius Monday, and starting getting incredible mileage... My old BMW never got better than 18mpg.., good riddance...
Welcome and Congratulations on your new Prius. IMHO the very best part of owning a Prius is not the car but the community of Prius driver-owners. The Prius is a very complex hi tech car - but having an active and helpful people in forums like Priuschat makes the learn curve all that much shorter and the transition to the new tech that much easier.
