After market Navigation

When I spoke to the factory rep, he recommended the GPS antenna be located on the 3x3 inch provided metal square away from the unit. For those who choose to mount it directly on the unit, you are introducing a constant magnetism to the case. If there is future trouble...well...

 

I have had no issues with the bluetooth so far.

 

It's a little quirky (like everything in this unit) but it does work fine.

I also have to admit... I put google maps and the satnav in this HU to the test and they took me the same exact route home. Granted, the ETA was far more accurate on google maps for obvious reasons but that was the only real difference.

 

I am sticking with my Tunelink bluetooth unit through the aux port. It is rock-solid reliable and links without any intervention. I have Bluetooth hands free in my OnStar mirror to take care of phone calls.

 

How does your iPod connector work? I installed mine and it doesn't seem to read the iPod correctly. The iPod keeps shutting off and starting over. It could be that the iPod battery is shot and it doesn't have enough juice to stay on to communicate to the HU.

 

The first time I plugged it in it took some time to charge up the battery on my old 30gb classic iPod. But now it works normal.

Can you sort and select songs on your iPod from the nav screen?

 

I'm not sure what you mean by sort songs. I can select albums, songs, artists, shuffle etc.

 

I cant get the option to save. Am I doing something wrong?

 

I installed the backup camera this morning and, like other posters have said, it took a few hours. Fortunately everything works as planned. I added a switch so that I can activate the camera manually whenever I want. One unexpected observation: when the camera is activated, the music, whether playing the radio or through the aux input, becomes nearly inaudible. It returns to normal when the camera is off. It seems to be a function of the design of the unit.

 

After tech support sent me a new sd card, the navigation is working. I installed the camera yesterday and everything is working great. It did take about 2 hours to install. There are a few things wrong with the HU but I am pleased with the unit for only $290.

 

Congrats on a good install. I can live with the audio cutouts for backup camera, voice-prompts and BT. But what I've discovered is the unit needs a "boot-up" time before the camera turns on. I'm usually ready to be in reverse long before it's ready so I don't see what's right behind the car at first. Oh well, who knew. The solution is to sit there until it is ready.

 

I noticed the delay as well. Fortunately, it is not long, about 5 to 8 seconds I think. The main reason I installed the manual switch is because when i leave in the morning I usually just "bump" the car in reverse, with most of the reverse motion by momentum in neutral. That way the engine doesn't fire until I am ready to go. The switch allows me to have the reverse camera on the whole time. It would be better if it could come on instantly on startup, but it is tolerable.

 

Magnetic fields have very little influence on electronics unless the field is powerful and moving. Note that many phones and tablets have magnets built in (like the iPad). If the field is moving, it will induce a current in nearby wires. That's how generators work. But sticking a magnet to the outside of the metal case won't do anything harmful.

 

I installed my backup camera today. The installation went ok, it just takes time to snake all of the wires into place. My $14 camera works great, excellent resolution, brightness, super small, and wide angle.

Notes:

1. I used a step-drill bit to drill a hole in the rear hatchback for the camera wires. The panel is aluminum so it's easy to drill. I lined the inner diameter of the hole with electrical tape to prevent wear on the wires, and sealed the hole with electrical tape to prevent any water getting inside the car (not likely due to the location anyway).



2. Connections were simple: Blue "back" headunit wire to red camera wire and drivers side rear tail light reverse bulb wire. Black camera wire is left disconnected. Camera RCA plug to headunit RCA plug, you'll need an extension cable so pick up a 6' male/female RCA cable, or a female/female adapter and a 6' male/male RCA cable. And about 15' of speaker wire to get the blue wire back to the camera.

3. In the previously posted installation video the guy struggled with the rubber seal below the rear window. He used a bunch of scotch tape, I found out a Qtip makes it easy to get the seal in the correct position, no tape needed.

 

Nice job! Looks very similar to what I did. I'm finding the backup camera to be especially helpful during parallel parking. The colored lines help me gauge just where the car behind me is so I leave enough room for me (or the other car) to leave.

I finally got my Karr alarm reset last week from the "black wire" mistake - but in my defense, the camera came with no instructions. The video someone posted on how to do the wire-fishing was very helpful.

Now I'm getting used to the Bluetooth features. I was hoping for a full address book capacity, but it doesn't work like that.

 

I didn't remove quite as many panels as the video. I didn't need to remove lower rear trunk panels. I accessed the reverse bulb wire from the plastic vented cover, then partially unpopped the upper trunk panels and fished the wire up to where I could grab it and route it forward.

My previous factory nav had zero bluetooth address book functionality, so this Myron & Davis is a step up for me.

 

I haven't had enough calls in my car to notice, but as I understand it, the 3 categories might be "rolling" information. That's to say the last 5 calls you make are stored as are the last 5 you answered or missed. Maybe someone here can confirm that.
