What's the best post-charge EV mileage estimate you've gotten?

    As I'm learning to drive my PiP more efficiently, I look forward to starting it up in the morning and seeing if it will reward me by telling me that it plans to go on electric power for a little longer than it did the day before. What's the best first-thing-in-the-morning estimate you've gotten?

    :confused:Can't remember what I was getting the first month I had my Plug In. I'm thinking around 12 miles? Dropped to about 9.5 during winter months and is now around 10.5. My one way commute is 9.8 miles. Sound like that has a bearing. Most others are reporting more.

    I've got a long ways to go then. I thought I was doing well getting it up to 11.0!

    14.8 a number based on how I used the EV capacity for the past few days. My low value is 13.1 Every morning I make a 5 mile trip, downhill for a mile, mostly flat for 3 miles then back up the hill for a mile. I coast (neutral) down the hill so the ICE won't come on, depending on signal lights that can last for 1.5 miles. On the return if I EV up the hill (costs about 3 miles indication for that 1 mile) for a few days my predicted EV will drop to the low 13s. If I HV up the hill (ICE goes on and heats up to 130 degrees) for a few days my predicted EV will move to the high 14s. How low or high the predicted EV will go depends on how I use the rest of the charge for other trips, sometimes efficiently, sometimes not. sometimes no more tirps. So the EV indication is part of the built-in game that makes the Prius so interesting.

    Now that we just pass winter time, yesterday I reached 12.7 and it's a good number for me.:)

    i think i hit 16.8 last year, but i would have to look at old posts to verify. i had 14.8 yesterday morning.

    :confused:Drove to work in EV mode. Set the charger to start charging one hour later. Left work around 2:00 PM. High temperature in central Virginia today was 90 degrees. To my surprise, available range was (only) 9.2 EVmiles, which is about as low as I've ever had. Drove home in EV mode with AC on. Parked my Prius in the garage and cut it off. Trip was 10.0 miles, at .999 with 1.4 EV miles left. Houston, we have confusion? Why can't available EV miles work similar to a GPS, compensating for higher, lower, speeds, terrain, etc. Anyone else share my confusion with available EV miles?

    You forgot to put in the equation the energy regenerated by the vehicle while driving;)

    There's no confusion. The "EV miles" are a software guess as to miles you might go with the battery at whatever the charge level happens to be at the time. No one knows how the software guess is calculated except the software guy in Japan and he's not talking. In any case it really doesn't mean much. If it says 5 miles and you go up a steep hill you may get 2 miles. Or if you go down a hill you could get 30 miles if the hill were that long. On the flat you might get the 5 miles if you go 25mph, you certainly won't get it if you go 60mph. Alternately you could call that confusing :)

    Best I've seen was last Friday when it was 17.5 miles.

    The pattern I have seen is that gradually increases over the week with my 47 mile commute. I use EV mode on the flat and downhill bits and HV mode on the uphill. Generally get 20-21 total EV miles on those days. At the weekend do short journeys using only EV and as I live in a fairly hilly area I would only get 12-13 EV miles. This then reduces the total EV miles predicted on a full charge.

    The estimation for using A/C is a bit too simplistic since it reduces your EV miles by a fixed percentage when the fan is on. It doesn't take into account the load, which you can prove to yourself by changing fan speed and turn on/off the A/C. At 90 degrees it is overly pessimistic, but you should see it decrease slower than the rate you are driving if you keep tabs on it.

    The flip side is that estimating the EV miles consumed by climate control accurately depends on variables that can't be predicted. How long will the climate control be on? It's not like EV miles consumed by driving, which essentially zero when you are stopped. The worst case is that you could it parked and run climate control until all EV miles are consumed and get 0 EV miles, but the computer can't predict that.

    You mean when the fan is on.

    And yes it seems to subtract a fixed percentage (about 10-12%) whether you have the fan on low with no A/C or the fan on high with A/C. Seat heaters, rear defroster, lights, audio have no effect. Not all that big of a deal in the PIP, but in an EV I would expect much better.

    Mine has been around 10.2, but I don't pay it a whole lot of attention. Yesterday, according to the screen that pops up when you shut the car down, my commute was 15.7 miles. I left the car in EV all the way and that includes traffic and 70+mph sprints on the Parkway. The readout said I got 199 mpg when I shut the car off. I'm happy.

    The purpose is to just give you a heads up that climate-control will impact EV, to raise awareness.

    With so many variables at play, more than with an EV in fact, the ability to present an accurate estimate isn't realistic.
