Hey guys, newly purchased 2013 prius i'm about 3,200+ miles in and was wondering when would a good time be to get my 1st oil change? just wanted to know if i'm around the ball park range in getting one or not. thanks!
You mean doing this on your own and outside of covered maintenance? A few threads and results are 10k is not an issue.
A lot of people like to make the first oil change before the recommended 10k miles. 5k is reasonable for an early change.
I did it at 10k, nothing wrong with my engine. That's my opinion, you can do whatever you want with it.
Me too. 1) Engines are built to tighter tolerance today than before. 2) Oil is much better. 3) But, old habits die hard.
One thing I noticed that when people start another one of those "when to do first oil change" thread, they are not asking for answers, but rather confirmation of their preconceived believes. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Let people know your location would help. Just North of the 49th parallel in Canada the interval is 6 months or 8000 km (5000 miles). Go a few km's south into the States, same climate, same car, and the interval is 12 months or 10000 miles. Being in Canada, I go with the first, but even if Toyota increased it I'd likely stay with the shorter interval: it costs about $30~40 for the parts, and takes an hour or two, if you DIY.
I felt the same way about early oil change. I called the dealer and was told if it makes you feel better get it changed early. It's a waste of money though. The new oil Toyota uses is really made for 10k miles with no problem. Yes, old habits do die hard.
10k is from Toyota and the dealer, I was told Toyota dumps in special additives at the factory for the first break in period and you want to keep it in at least till 7500..............
^ Then, in Canada, where Toyota says to pull the drain plug at 8000 km (5000 miles), we're draining those "special additives" prematurely, LOL.
