My son and I were shopping for a 2d family car for several weeks. We tried a Nissan Leaf (not bad at all as a 2d car, IMHO), a Chevy Volt (drives well but not enough room), a Ford somethingforgettableelectric, and finally a Ford Fusion Hybrid. We liked the Fusion Hybrid the best, so we went to a dealer in neighboring Maryland (fewer purchase fees) and pointed to the Ford Fusion with the paint & trim we wanted, said "we just test-drove one - let's haggle", and then...

...then we realized filling out the paperwork we had just selected a Ford Fusion Energi i.e. the plug-in version. Neither of us had realized that Ford now makes PHEVs. We happily bought it.

    Two reasons:
    - double the electric range of the Prius.
    - it's a well-built, well-appointed, solid car on its own merits.

1st time I had seriously looked at American cars in about 20 years. My oh my, they have come a long way. The electronics are most excellent.

Let us know over the next few weeks how it stacks up against the PIP. More plug-in choices is a good thing. Allegiance comes first to the technology;)

...plus you get a bigger Federal tax credit vs. PiP, and if your son lives in Arlington, then he gets the unique Arlington Co. clean fuels car property tax benefit.

Since MD is CARB state you might have better re-sale option in MD too, but I am not sure on that one.

Sorry the new VA $64/yr fee applies, but register thru to 2016 if you can.

I will be interested to hear what the real-world EV range is compared to your PiP in comparable use. By all means, please keep us informed. ;)

Sounds like a nice ride. Good to see American companies starting to make efficient vehicles.

:)Nice to have so many options. Would appreciate as much feedback on non Toyota vehicles as possible. Let's think outside the box.

I suspect it was a Ford Focus Electric that you test drove. I would love to be your your Ford dealer, you signed over $36k for car that costs much less and didn't blink an eye until you realized it was a plug-in.

Do report back your fuel economy. We would love to know how if you can get EPA on the Fusion.

The EV range so far is just over 20 miles... between 21 and 22. Of course' a week's data is not that much data.

The one we bought is the Focus Energi Titanium version. It listed for $45k plus change MSRP, and then come the fees etc. So, we're quite happy with the price we paid.

Now I am confused. You test drove the Focus electric and the Fusion Hybrid Plug in. You purchased the Fusion, right? I don't think the Focus can be optioned to $45k.

Yeah this whole naming their cars starting with an F is ridiculous. Good thing they stopped.

"Dad", for comparison, how far do you usually go on EV only in your PiP? In their advertising, I believe Ford said both the Fusion and Focus Energi models would deliver 20 EV only miles, compared to the EPA figure of 6 miles on EV only for the plug-in Prius. Since I routinely get more than double that (14-15) I'm wondering if I could expect around 40 from the Energi under the same driving conditions I have with my Prius. Does the EPA info at the bottom of the window sticker from your car show 20 for EV only? Or is Ford comparing apples to oranges in their advertising?;)

Oops! As you said in an earlier post, too many models starting with "F". But I missed the one they named differently.:oops:And two "Energi" models. What is interesting to me is their claim for the same EV miles on what appear to me to be cars with significant weight differences. I don't have the figures; the Fusion just looks heavier.

EPA for the PiP is 11 with only a little gas. The 6 is because there is a "hill" in the test that makes it go into ICE mode.
Lots of people get 12-14 by never accelerating hard and going slower.
