Engine Link app for iphone, ipad

Scangauge is a stand alone device. Torque is the android app you are thinking of. Engine link works well. I bought a wifi elm327 device from amazon. The opening screen of the app shows how to connect to the wifi obd2 device. There is also some good info on the engine link developers site. It seems to do everything the scangauge does. It can be programmed with the custom pid's that are out there for torque.

If you are interested in hypermiling and have a gen 3, extra instrumentation is not needed. You have everything you need with the hsi

 

Just bought it myself, waiting on Amazon for the ELM. I'm well versed in scanning and tuning using my laptop and HP Tuners but this app is new to me.

Hopefully some experienced users will step in.

 

I have had occasional times when the app disconnects from the adapter. Sometimes it reconnects with a tap of the "connect" button, sometimes I have to force-close the app and restart. Not sure if this is the app or the adapter though.

I bought Dashcommand and a GoPoint bluetooth back in January but am disappointed in that it doesn't support the custom PID's.

The app and ELM 327 work great, but the standard dashboard it comes with doesn't tell you much, tach and temp gauge. It's interesting the Prius runs at 190 degrees, most modern cars run hotter.

I've posted up a couple of threads to see if anyone has custom dashboards set up so I could learn from them...but haven't heard anything back on that.

I do have a little problem with the wifi - when scanning, the phone is linked to the elm wifi and so has no internet connection so I can't stream the radio or check email when stopped in traffic. I could solve this problem by using an old phone that I have, just haven't bothered with it yet.

 

I have ignition timing advance, hybrid battery state of charge, instantaneous mpg, coolant temp, rpm, and hybrid battery current displayed. Mostly though I am watching the car's hybrid system indicator and instant mpg display.

I use my phone's data connection all the time along with using the wifi for engine link (texting, receiving email, streaming pandora, etc) without any problem.

 

It looks like a great $40 solution (if you have an iPhone). Question: doesn't the ELM device get in the way of your foot and or knee? Has anyone found a shorter wifi version of the ELM that costs less than $30?

And that is interesting that you still get data - I'm going to have to try that again, maybe it was just a fluke the day I tried it I didn't get email/data while using it.

 

I have 8 gauges: engine coolant temperature, hv soc, aux bat v, ice torque, throttle position, load cond, instantaneous mgp, and ice rev. I am experiencing a 5-10 second delay with all the gauges. Any ideas how to get rid of delay?

 

Have gone down to two gauges (RPM and MPG) still have 8-10 second delay. Not good.

 

I just bought Engine Link and have no problems so far will the wifi connection...I plan to get a 4 ft or so OBD2 extension with a right angle connector to get the ELM away from my knees so I don't bump it...I'll probably put it in the middle tray or hide it in the glove box so I can unplug it when it isn't in use.

Can anyone explain the Custom PIDs..how to install them / use them?? thanks

 

There is a full thread here Engine Link for iPhone | PriusChat with a lot of good information on the Engine Link app along with a complete spreadsheet on PID's for the Gen III Prius compliments of vincent1449p. His spreadsheet is for the Torque app but the Torque PID's can be easily converted to Engine Link PID's. This is explained in this thread.

I use the Engine Link on my iPad and have created three custom pages, one for the HV battery, one for the HV system including MG's, and one for the AFL and O2 sensors. It works great.

I have the WiFi unit plugged in the OBDII port and have never had an issue with it interfering with my knees.

I wonder if there are any differences between Vincent's and those included with the app?

Is there a Tire Pressure one...I'd love to see actual tire pressures!!

 

Probably 75% of Vincent's PID's are included in the Gen III app. It looks like the one in the app was a condensed copy of Vincent's.

No tire pressures.
