Turn off Reverse Beep - Mac Instructions

The dealership has to pay the tech 1/2 hour of labor every time he plugs in their Techstream to a customer car. I'm sure you don't work for free either.

 

My dealer did it for free when I took delivery, and billed it to their internal new car sales make-ready account.

Turning off the beeps is much easier with ScanGuage II but, of course, its much more expensive.

 

My SGII needs to be updated so I used the ELM327 Terminal app on my Android phone along with the ELM 327 Bluetooth adapter. It worked exactly as described above and in this link.

i do say get that reverse done during delivery of the car.
some dealers are willing to do it for free, but it's rather troublesome when you find your* dealer wouldn't do it for free.
my dealer told me I was the first one to get that reverse customized during the delivery, and i waited very patiently to get that done.

Local dealer programmed mine from constant beep while in reverse to just one beep. They initially wanted $20 but I mentioned that other dealerships were doing it as a courtesy to Prius owners and they agreed to do it at no charge.

 

Ever hear of "Flat Rate"? That is how "Techs" (aka Mechanics) get paid. A tire rotation or oil change doesn't require connecting the Techstream to the diagnostic port, and is usually performed by an hourly lube rack guy who doesn't have access to the Techstream. (Panasonic Toughbook with proprietary software and connector) So they would have to pull a flat rate mechanic away from whatever job he is working on, and have him connect the Techstream to your car, and make the changes. The Toyota dealership I worked at charged $105/hour for labor. The Lexus dealership I work at gets $120/hour. I know some areas get considerably more for labor, like the Bay Area or L.A.

I don't know what you do for a living, but again, I doubt you'd be willing to do 10 minutes of work for free, for someone you don't even know.

OTOH, the Director of Parts and Service at the Toyota dealership would do things like this himself, free, in the interest of customer loyalty. He is by far the exception however. I don't know of another dealership in the Portland Metro area that will not charge you30 minutes labor, just for connecting the Techstream.

Had mine done for free at 5k also. Don't think that's asking much. Would be cool if the Car Settings from the touchscreen actually had all the settings accessible.

 

While I would not expect a random dealer to do these Techstream operations for free, it seems to be rather common at least in my area to do these sorts of things as part of new car sales dealer prep. It's figured into the price you negotiate for the car.

 

Aye. That is why We (PC) recommend having it done during purchase. It's a lot easier to negotiate at that time.

 

I asked my service manager about Techstream & other Nav/Entune updates. I was told I get 1 courtesy update with Techstream and at least the 1st update for Nav/Entune free. Beyond that he could not give me a definitive answer for cost after that.

 

On later 2012 models Entune, or 2012s that already have the first thumb drive update, will update itself via your cell phone and Bluetooth connection. I would verify the Nav update as a separate item. That could prove useful!

 

Is there a safe way to exit the process before finishing I.e., in case of an erroneous entry?

Another cool thing would be to disable the seatbelt nag.

I purchased my Pip in November. I was not aware they already have an update for Entune. I do hope it will be lesss buggy then it is now. In regard to Nav update I did speak with the Mgr and was told 1 update is included with my purchase. He did say it would cost after that but did not have a $$$ amount. He has everyone saying how silly it is to try to charge $100+ for a thumb drive update when most consumer gps models now include lifetime map updates or say $70 1 time purchase for lifetime like Garmin offers. I'll take my free updates and just deal after that.

 

The alternative

 

The early 2012 models without the premium system required an update via a thumb drive Toyota sent you. After that update was applied, Entune could update via your cell phone connection. By November all models should have had the update applied.

 

That's totally cool. It reminds me of how we used to talk to modems - ATDT and all that.
