With a plug in would you not be better off with a night rate meter. I am paying just under 6p per hr night rate.

That would be Bonneville Power Administration, not Bonneville Dam. The power was cheap because politicians got involved and financed the region's power generation with cheap federal money from taxpayers elsewhere. It became much less cheap when a later generation of politicians from elsewhere got annoyed with subsidizing our power, and started pulling out those subsidies.
Your public utility also has legal preferences over private utilities such as PG&E, so they are not on a level playing field.

Do Brit PiP owners ever use public chargers? I understand that public chargers are mandated to use a standard plug other than J1772, and the conversion cables cost the equivalent of several hundred dollars.

NYC...rate with all taxes comes to about 25 cents per kwh. You can sign up for a time of day use plan, but while they give you a discount at night, they jack up your day rate. So if you still need a significant amount of power during the day, you are screwed. Con Ed is not EV friendly. I asked a rep if they had any special plans for EV owners and they said, "NOPE. Why should other people pay a higher rate so you can use cheaper electricity for your car. "

Yeah, would be interesting to see how photovoltaic panels + Leaf or Tesla guys are doing with the E-9 rate plan. Would be great to sell back to PG&E excess production at peak summer hours/rates and do some heavy duty charging at those dirt cheap early morning hours! Let us know when you have a year of data to compare E-6 to E-9.

... wow, that sales rep doesn't seem to get it. The reason charging EV cars is cheaper for the utility company at night is because that's when most parts of the grid have excess. So the utility company is therefore able to be making money on nighttime grid power that would otherwise not sell. Maybe you should explain that to him - that special Ev rates have nothing to do with making regular customers pay more. Geez ... What a tool. When someone speaks so much ignorance - maybe you should check with somebody else. It would be sad if they actually did provide a better rate but this poor guy simply didn't have a clue.

More specifically, coal power they would otherwise not sell.

the 2nd one ... so over each month if the meter were to spin forward 1000 kilowatt hours and also spun in reverse 1000 kilowatt hours - our bill would read zero for that month, as though we had no electricity use . But as the graph shows on our bill sometimes it primarily runs forward - while months with longer day light, it mostly runs the opposite direction. So in order to generate surplus you have to not only generate as much juice as you use during daytime - you have to generate more than enough to cover your night time use. That's what causes the meter to show surplus generation on most of the long days of the warmer months.

I read through every last line of the Con Ed rate sheets in addition to talking to this customer "service" rep. I get what you are saying, but Con Ed is only interested in giving a discount if you take away a significant portion of your daytime usage and move it to night. A typical EV owner is simply going to keep his daytime home usage the same and add some night time charging.

While I don't exactly sympathize with ConEd, they often have a problem of not being able to keep up with daytime demand in the heat of summer. They are more interested in decreasing daytime consumption than selling more at night. In the summer, ConEd actually raises rates a bit...up to about 27 cents per kwh to discourage usage.

That's the way ripoff PG&E is as well. Sign up for TOU? Peak rates (1 to 7 pm every weekday of "summer") is very high.

However, your rates do sound very high compared to even ripoff PG&E.

Thanks for the clarification. How large an array collected those 629 kWh in February ?
BTW, if I am reading right, you ran your house and car(s) 0n 500 kWh. That sounds pretty far ahead of the curve.

Damn, sucks to be on top. I pay the lousy PG&E E1 rates. Since the entirety of the 100 kWh in tier 3 on my bill every month is consumed by my car, I pay $0.30 per kWh. I can't do the crazy math of charge loss and taxes and delivery. I'm just gonna wave my hand and say $1 for 1 full charge a day. In other words, my electricity bill has gone up 50% for my car.

This means it costs less for me to buy gas than plug my car in. So I switched over to E9A rates this month. My back of the envelope calculations say I will save at most $10 a month. My wife is already yelling at me that she has to wait until 9pm to wash clothes. Lets hope it's more than $10.

    Wash, or dry ?

I think our electric washing machine consumes about 200 Wh a load, usually run on less spin at the end of the cycle and using cold water. The clothes come out great after drying on the line outside. My wife dislikes the chore of clothes hanging, but I do not mind it at all, thereby ditching the dryer and not causing ill-will.

Both. That's why she is so upset. I told her to set the timer but she has to dry as well and letting wet clothes sit overnight is the end of the world. I was really surprised at the animosity I received from both my sister's when I mentioned a switch to TOU. Both scolded me mercilessly for going against freedom and liberty to choose when to wash clothes. How dare I tell my dad when to turn on the dishwasher. (My parents live with me). It makes me really appreciate how my wife is willing to tolerate my shenanigans. But I'm on thin ice if I don't save $10.

Shame as that would more than halve your charging costs.

Hopefully we will get a few more suppliers in the market sooner rather than later which should provide a bit of healthy competition.

Solar panels are a good investment if you have an appropriate location.
