You have to file form 8936- that's the current form to use for 2012 and later qualifying vehicles...

    Success... at last!
After a little over 2hrs on the phone with the IRS last night and a followup 25 min call this morning- they have finally restored my $2500 Electric Vehicle credit- I should see the refund in my account within 2-4 weeks.

After three separate phone calls- no regular agent could see any reason for my form 8936 to be rejected- so they finally transferred me to a "tax law specialist" who, after about 15 min of research admitted that the IRS made a mistake and said "you are 100% entitled to the $2500 credit" and he restored it to my 1040 as filed.
So I will finally be getting the $25oo refund as expected!

Congrats! As frustrating as it was for you, your efforts paid off in the end. Kudos for being the "squeaky wheel." Hopefully you have made it easier for some other folks with the same problem.

    Thanks!
My blood pressure was probably through the roof last night (one cordless phone died after about 1h45m and the other was starting to run low) - cause once the "tax law specialist" finally agreed to restore the credit- his computer locked up making it necessary to go back to a regular agent again. By this time (7:10pm) the east coast offices were already closed so I had to call back this morning to finalize the procedure. I was anticipating problems with the call this morning- but due to his copious notes- it went smoothly.

In my case- they all admitted there was absolutely nothing wrong with my 1040 or the 8936 form, the "tax law specialist" said he knew they were having problems with "energy credits" but this was the first form 8936 problem he had worked with.

Keep in mind- the regular agents you speak with first, can only see that you were denied the credit- but wouldn't or couldn't restore the credit till they got the OK from the "tax law specialist" who reviews the case, makes the decision and finally put notes in the account- then you go back to the regular agents who can then restore the credits after reading the notes from the "tax law specialist".

It's a long, convoluted procedure- but it's worth $2500 to hang in there!
As frustrating as it is to be put on hold for up to 35+ min at a time, then speak to someone else that transfers you to hold again for another agent- be pleasant and polite to the agents you speak with- they're human and it does make a difference.

Yes, but the system is keeping people employed, even with the built-in redundancy.;)

One thing I forgot to mention....
Initially, when I saw from the IRS "where's my refund" link that my expected refund was $2500 short- I called the IRS. The agent I first spoke with couldn't see anything wrong with my return and said I'd have to wait for the "adjustment letter" to arrive via snailmail because it would tell us exactly why the credit was rejected and how to remedy the situation.
Well, I got the "adjustment letter" yesterday- there was no explanation as to why the credit was denied, no remedy- just a few vague lines to the effect of "we have adjusted your return because you deducted too much credit".

So waiting for the "adjustment letter" to arrive was a big waste of 8 days!

    Congratulation! Thanks for your sharing.

My letter is different issue, IRS use 30C not 30D to reject my credit.

I hope it is easy for me to appeal on this issue.

Make sure you document everything- it's a long process and it's easy to forget names (and Agent ID #'s) and dates of the ppl you speak with.

I don't believe Solyndra could have held up against domestic competition.

We'll never know as it succumbed to Chinese solar competitors who had more of their government's support than Solyndra had in the US.

Countries like China, Germany, Taiwan, Japan have made having a strong solar energy manufacturing base a matter of national industrial policy. It is why they lead the world in solar energy industry and US is a distant fifth.

Solyndra was a big bet on the future of Si supplies. If Si supplies became constrained, as predicted, the Solyndra approach would have paid off but Si supplies actually went the other direction with the 2008 recession. The Chinese manufacturing of wafers benefited by a technology refresh at semi-conductor fabs, making the older equipment available for pennies on the dollar. The old equipment was/is still useful for making solar cells, as long as there is plenty of Si supply.

    Thanks!
I hope I never have to go through that BS again. I also had to jump through hoops for 2+ months to get the $500 EV rebate from out local electric utility.
Between the two of them- it was the most aggravating $3k I ever collected- both were supposed to be "simple" but proved to be anything but...

Has anyone else who had their EV credit initially rejected by the IRS been successful in getting it restored?

I just received my Fed Tax Refund today, and it was $2500 less than I expected. Hmmm, I wonder what the problem could be? It turns out my tax person used form 8834 instead of 8936. So, will have to re-submit and wait. However, from the sound it, a number of people filed using the correct form 8936, and still didn't get the credit. At least I haven't had to spend hours on the phone talking to the IRS.......well, not yet anyway.... Thanks for the info on the correct form!

Probably because all the top experienced IRS agents are busy working on non-profit organization applications.

Your name may have got listed on one of the "Tea Party" donor's lists. Claiming any and all tax credits is something a "Tea Party Patriot" would do.

My $2500 was finally deposited. I sent the letter with all prints from IRS website . I got the letter said that IRS haven't finished their research for this tax credit at the middle of May. 10 days later, $2500 was refunded.
