Sound Deadening Advice

    Hey All!

    Planning to start some sound deadening for my Prius C3. Just wanted some advice on which brand and how much material I should buy.

    I'm only planning to do the 4 doors and maybe the trunk area (if I can figure it out)

    How much square footage should I get? And would the fat mat brand be sufficient? (i.e. 50 Sq Ft FatMat 50 mill Bulk Pack w/Install Kit Included : Amazon.com : Automotive)

    Would doing the doors make any difference at all? I also wouldn't mind having it in the doors for better insulation - I notice some serious drafts from my driver's side door when it's really windy out. Thanks!

    Have you heard of dynamat before? They offer "door kits". From what I understand though you would install one piece inside the door, so on the back side of the outer sheet metal, and one piece replaces the stock moisture barrier.... Not sure if it would change the draft problem or not... Sometimes, and I say this about other cars I have not looked behind the prius c door panel, the moisture barrier has holes cut for things like locking mechanism and interior door handles which alow for some air to flow through. Good luck with the sound dampening, I am excited to see your progress.

    I used the Fatmat on all my doors when I replaced the speakers. The 50' kit gave me just enough for the Gen III doors. Bought the same kit from Amazon and found it goes on pretty easily. I really like it; it seems to make the doors sound a little more solid when I close them (hate the original tin can hollow sound), and I have no rattles when I crank the stereo like I did in previous cars without sound deadener. I don't think it does much for air but then again, why wouldn't it? It's an insulator.

    As an insulator it will reduce conduction and local convection (heat transfer). To eliminate actual drafts you need to seal up a leak somewhere.

    Been reading a lot about this. I'm going to get a butyl based one - read that the asphalt ones (like fatmat) aren't too great and also can have odours... Just looking for the best price now. Lots of options out there.

    I covered the entire trunk and rear seat area on my wife's Mustang GT with Fatmat and yes there is a slight odor when installed but that was gone within a day or two.

    It made a huge difference on my wife's Mustang! But keep in mind that this stuff is not light. So MPG's may suffer a little bit if you cover a lot of area.

    I would like to know from people who have installed Fatmat or other products on their Prius C, what areas did they cover and what results they got.

    I still have some Fatmat left over and would like to make the best of it on my Prius C

    I'm going to try this product - called GTMat Onyx - Car Auto Audio Sound Dampening Deadener 36 SQ FT GTmat Onyx Butyl

    Been debating a lot, but their prices are slightly better than the other Butyl-based sound deadening product and they offer a 90 day satisfaction guarantee - basically they'll refund your money if you don't like it. Doesn't hurt to try it out and see! :p GTMat has very little reviews online - they just started up last year so it looks like they're trying to get word of mouth advertising out there... I was a little wary about doing it, but here's to hoping for the best :)

    I ordered 50sq feet of it.

    I hope I'm not in over my head here - never taken apart car doors, etc. but... gotta start somewhere :)

    I spoke to a guy at GTMat and he was thinking that between 36sq feet and 50sq feet should do it. I'm ordering 50sq feet to be safe.

    Holy crap, that is a lot for 36sq feet. Let me know ow it foes before I try it. I might go with fatmat simply because its cheaper.

    I was initially going to go with fatmat because of price but after reading a lot about asphalt based deadeners, I decided that the butyl based ones are worth the extra cost. :)

    I did a complete double cover of Sound deadening - pictures and information starts about halfway down PG 3 on this thread.
    Picked up my new PC3 today - HIDs installed, debadged, more to come | Page 3 | PriusChat

    I double layered the whole car, I have subs that literally redirect my rearview mirror, and they can not be heard outside the vehicle. Its as quiet as a luxury car, and lots of people say "WOW its so quiet". Killed the road noise issue. I used 100ft of fatmat - the odor dissipates in about 3 days, after about 6 months of use I am EXTREMELY satisfied with it - despite all of the bad reviews that I had read. Much less expensive, and easy install. In addition to that I also put 40 sq ft of butyl based deadener in the doors, it was clearly a superior product, but I spent more on the butyl than the 100 sqft of fatmat.     i had a 370z and dynamat-ed the car and really regretted it. while the sound was much improved, the car felt like it weighted a ton. even buying the product you can see how much weight you are putting in your car. its just my opinion tho, those product works wonders for sound quality but are you willing to sacrifice mpg?

    i put in 25sq feet of material and haven't noticed any hit to MPG.

    Whenever I save the money, I will do this. probably will be in July. Which is unfortunate as it will be hot as b@lls here in the south. I'll keep you guys informed, of course.

    Where did you put it col127?
