Warm Weather MPGs

It's ok. Better to ask than not.

In my picture it shows how much that trip cost in fuel ($2.26) and how many miles I traveled (62.4). I had programmed my car to remember gas costs $3.96/ga.

The math:
$2.26 / $3.95 = .572

62.4 miles / .572 = 109mpg

I'm going off of memory here but it works the same and I don't feel like digging around for my thread with all of the details.

 

I had my best tank so far this year due to the warm weather yesterday. 57.7...not exactly the most impressive MPG, but it just means that things can only get better. Right now, my car is saying that I am getting over 62 MPG, but this is just at the 100 mile mark for this tank and typically that gauge is at least 2 miles off. I have never looked more forward to traffic!

It has been fery cool here the last week with nights into high 30's. This is the 1st cool weather here since I bought the car. It is almost unbelievable how much the outside temp affects this car. Can anything really be done to offset this?

 

Some folks have blocked their grill with foam pipe insulation. Search the forum and you will see some pics and how-tos.

 

As Motorcyclegoat said, grill blocking is the only major thing you can do besides wait for warmer weather. I'd also check tire pressure and inflate closer to the tire's max (51 psi) than to the manual's recommended (35) - I have mine at 48 (f)/46 (r)-ish. Where do you live, btw?

I used 3/4 in. foam pipe insulation. Two 6-ft pieces did the trick, about $3 total including tax. Cut with regular scissors into 4 pieces that fit across the grille, with notches cut halfway through to fit around the grill's vertical supports. One piece goes on top grill opening (with about 1/4" left on top and bottom to vent), and up to three on bottom that'll make a tight seal. I can post pictures if you want.

How much you block is up to you, because there don't seem to be definitive answers. People recommend things in the above threads, but the best way would be to get a scangauge/the torque app and monitor the temps yourself, and set alarms if they get too high.

Looks like your weather is somehow worse then Cleveland's at the moment. I'm guessing the mountains have something to do with that? Our temps look fairly similar (within about 10 degrees), but I haven't been driving at night. From January 3rd when I got my c until the end of March, I was getting about 45 mpg. Since then, I've been getting around 56.

 

slowly getting back to 50 MPG (90% highway driving).

WInter in the north is no joke.

I'm seeing better mileage in warmer weather, not sure if its the summer grade fuel being sold, tires with more pressure cause they're warmer and have better traction, the battery charging faster, whatever, it's working nicely.

 

First fill-up on my Prius C2. Tank was filled (?) by dealer when car was delivered and I reset Trip A right after leaving the dealership. Refueled today (E10) with 541.0 miles and 66.8 MPG indicated on Trip A. Car took 8.505 gallons at 2nd shutoff for actual 63.73 MPG. Warm temperatures and low-speed suburban driving. Assembly quality is outstanding - especially the "absolutely red" paint job. Car handles well, too. Also own a 2011 liftback.

 

Slow down to 65 and you'll get over 50.
