By cargo area...do you mean the back? The battery is under the center console so i am not sure where this liquid was spilt
This is the Gen 3 Prius forum, it has the HV Battery directly behind the rear seats. The silver box, in this gen 3
+1 Also I always put anything that will spill in side a large cat liter box so it can not spill, but if it does that container will catch the spill.
David, don't listen to these people telling you that you should have been more careful or have taken preventative measures. I didn't have the same problem with my Prius, but I do have a similar situation. I was using the restroom while talking on my cell phone. There I was on a telephone job interview when I shifted positions and SPLASH, my cell phone ended up in the toilet. After retrieving the phone, I found that the party on the other end hung up and only later that the job had been offered to someone else. What disturbs me is that there was no protective coating on the cell phone to protect it against toilet water and feces. I feel this is a serious design fault, and am outraged that my cell phone no longer works AND that I lost the job. I have posted a message on a fan site for the phones hoping that the phone manufacturer will redesign the phone so others who are conducting interviews in restrooms don't have the same issue and are aware that this could happen to them! It's folks like you and me that need to make corporations aware that we are only human and should not be held responsible for our actions. The manufacturer should be responsible for such things and should foresee every possible issue that might arise, regardless of our indiscretions.
Totally agree. Everyone sells cases for phones including the manufacturers, so they know it's a problem... They just choose to do nothing about it. SCH-I605 ? 2
I keep a heavy duty Rubbermaid tote in the trunk after I had 2 milk gallons collide and spill in the back of my Rav4, that resulted in total replacement of carpet and pad to get rid of sour milk smell.
I'm going to disagree with everyone here. Toyota should make the battery connections water tight, and provide drainage beneath the battery. You can cover the connections with rubber without affecting airflow or cooling; they're just being cheap.
There are very few connectors and devices in the interior of most cars and trucks that are waterproof or sealed. The exceptions are accelerator pedal position sensors and some airbag system connectors & components. Spills or leaks of significant quantity anywhere in the interior is usually very bad news.
wow, so they should produce indestructible vehicles for all of us that can survive human mistakes? Don't stop there, we know about tornadoes and earthquakes too, so they should make them strong enough to survive those too. Sounds like the person that would cry and sue over a coffee cup spill because the cup did not say hot on it. Take responsibility for your actions, and stop blaming others for not DUMMY proofing everything you throw at it. You bought it, you own it, now take care of it by adding on extras accessories according to your needs. Basic rule on ownership.
Frivolous lawsuits cost everyone in the long run. Lawyers, however, really don't care. Next time you gripe about the cost of your car, your insurance premiums and your overall cost of living, remember... You are paying for someone's lack of attentiveness. The hot coffee spill at McD 's is a classic example.
You can’t just cover the connections with rubber; it’s called a fire hazard. If the battery were to short circuit the wires would heat up and set the rubber on fire. You also can’t put drainage holes underneath as it allows moisture to enter as water vapor from below. There are reasons that the battery compartment is made the way it is. As I said in another thread the care of the car is our responsibility. If you think it is expensive now; imagine what it would cost if Toyota was forced to make it idiot proof. No one could afford it. So Toyota tells you not to spill liquids into the battery compartment. The correct action is to think, I need to put a barrier in the back so I can carry liquids and protect the battery compartment. Whether it is a mat or a box just something to contain any liquids that might spill.
the HOT 180 degrees coffee spill into the crotch of 79 year old Stella Liebeck at a drivethru caused instant third degree burns while the teenager employees cruelly LAUGHED at the screaming suffering woman. the manager came running out with ice water because the LAUGHING teens refused to immediately help her. but the horrible organ damage to her genitalia was already extensive. anyway McD and others like 7/11 still today make the coffee 150 degrees hot because of all the many people sticking their dirty fingers in the cup and lids while preparing it. 150 degrees hopefully kills the bacteria. 150 degrees is also hot enough for second degrees burns.
My 2 cents.... Hybrid, EV or other, anytime you have something liquid in the back, you put it in something to catch spills. Even if the barrier above the battery was waterproof so nothing could soak through, enough liquid would find a way around it.
