I have a Prius 1st gen and I just started having this problem yesterday. I started the car and the warning lights came on but the engine started. Then I put it into gear and the car stalled, engine shut down completely. Then I put it back into park and the engine started up again. So I put it into drive again and the engine shut down again, put it back into park and the engine started up. So I turned off the car and waited several minutes, started the car and put it into drive gear and was able to drive it to a mechanic. He said they couldn't get a code reading on it. Has anybody else had this problem and do you know what could be causing this intermittent problem?
Were there still warning lights? Do you have warning lights now? From what you have described, the ambiguity group, the list of things that could have failed, is too large to tell. If it is intermittent, it will be difficult to diagnose without a prius-aware scanner. Bob Wilson
Yes, there were warning lights and there are still warning lights ( PS and triangle with exclamation point). The auto mechanic shop is not a dealer but does deal with other Prius cars and says he has a prius-aware scanner.??
Where are you located? The reason I ask is we may know of someone to get a second opinion. Bob Wilson
I see one in Madison: Hybrid Shop Finder | Auto Career Development Center You might give them a call on Tuesday and ask if they have any more current suggestions.
