Whats the expected life for the OEM tires?

It would help if you put what type of OEM tire came with your car.

Mine came with Yokohama Avid S33D. I was only able to get 32,000 out of mine. The OEM tires do not have as much tread depth as new tires that we purchase.

 

It depends on your road conditions, temperatures, speed you drive, how hard you take concerns, etc. etc.

Between 25k and 40k is pretty average. Drive hard and you get less. Hypermile and you get more.

 

since we're just talking any OEM.. I read some get over 60k!

 

I'm at 51K and my Avid's still have enough tread to get me through the Spring. I've been keeping tabs on F8L's thread to help me decide on my next set of tires.

 

I have seen a few others that have gotten mileage similar to yours. Not sure how you have done that. I have seen more report mileage closer to mine than to yours.

I rotated every 5k or so and had even tread wear across the tire down to 4/32. I ran pressure at 40/38.

 

Maybe it's the warmer temps you are driving in? Higher driving speeds thus higher tire temps? High temps may cause a tire to age faster and or break down faster.

 

Good point. Most of my driving is highway driving so add that to the warmer climate and the tires will see more heat.

At the 30k mile mark on my current MXV4's it looks like I am going to make it to the 60k mile warranty mark with no trouble. One of the main reasons I have always like the Michelins.

 

I have 50k on my Goodyears. They will be replaced in the next six months.

 

Rotated every 5k, kept at 40/38 (for the most part). No unusual tread wear. Driven 50 miles per day (Mon-Fri), mostly highway (NYC/LI roads). Weekends are just local streets (food shopping, etc.) I am actually somewhat surprised (and glad!) they lasted this long.

I'm trying to decide between the Michelin Energy Saver A/S, Michelin Defender, or the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422. Decisions, decisions...

 

I rotated every 5K and varied pressure either 38/36 or 40/38. Perfect tread wear first set driven mostly on vacation and in and around SF, 2nd set weekend travel of 100+, 3rd set on 112 mile round-trip commute to San Jose, CA, 6-7 times a week. Here's my tire sets and mileage, all Michelin, first four sets from Costco, last from dealer Michelin Defender,

1st 27832 (odometer miles) OEM,
2nd 76953 Costco ~50K, started increasing air pressure on this new set,
3rd 147936 Costco ~70K,
4th 217689 ~70K Costco,
5th set Toyota.

My mileage has tanked with the Defenders down 10-15%, ouch! I'm putting them on Craigslist and going back to Costco.

 

Without getting real precise, my OE Goodyears at 22k look like they will be good for ~40k based on dealer reported tread depth. As others have said, it depends a lot on your driving. Hard driving and/or lots of corners reduce tire life.

 

My GFs V-3 was bought on or about 2012-09-24.
As of 2013-04-27 the car had 23,514 miles on it and the tires looked spectacular, so I took pics:
Yokohama BluEarth S34 205/60/16 Treadwear rating 320 Tire Pressure 35PSI all around.
I'm expecting 60-80k. Mostly freeway driving, ~125 mi. per day in the area including Dixon, Concord, and Sacramento, Northern California.

 

you guys should post up your treadwear rating.

 

According to the bottom pic in my post, treadwear rating is 320.

 

...and tire pressure. The lower the pressure, the faster the wear.

 

I'm hoping to get a least 40k out of my 17" Toyo Proxes that came on the car. I theorize auto manufactures tend to spec tires that need replacing after about 35k miles or so - just about the time when cars are turned back in at lease expiration. Even if you can stretch them out longer, you're still on the hook for tire replacement since they want at least 4/32 of tread at the end of the lease. Just a theory, or is it?

 

My 2011 Prius came with Yokohama Avid S33 tires. The tires need replacing after only 25,000 miles. To say I am
disappointed would be an understatement. My Toyota dealer has rotated the tires every 5,ooo miles and I have
maintained proper pressure. I am a careful driver (80 years old) and use good roads. This is the lowest mileage
I have ever had for a set of tires.

I am disappointed with Toyota for using such low grade tires. I will never accept another new car with Yokohama
tires nor will I ever buy Yokohama tires.
