I've owned my '10 coming up on a year now and just the other day out of the blue there is 2 smudges that appeared on the inside of the digital display unit ( The one you can change from mpg, mpg history, current mpg, etc. ) They look like dirty finger prints. There is no way of me cleaning them off since they are on the inside of the plastic, not on the outside. Have no idea what caused this but must of been from when the manufacture put the plastic on, they weren't wearing gloves. Not sure why it also took this long for the smudges to appear. Its really annoying since its like looking through dirty glass. Does anyone have any idea on how to clear this? I don't want to have to remove the whole dash to remove the plastic. Thanks
Are you talking about the speedometer display? If so, you will find that the smudges are on the *outside* of the display, even though they appear to be internal. The speedo display is a reflected unit that makes the image look like it is down inside the dash. If you reach up front where the windshield drops down to the dash, you can use a clean cloth to wipe the glass on the display, which should remove the smudges. In a similar post we had one person insisting that he had a maple seed inside of his display. It was sitting on top of the display glass, but appeared to be inside. Tom
Just to add, if you have any problems with your new car that are not obvious or easy to fix... bring it in to the dealer. That is what the warranty is for. Hopefully it isn't too much of a hassle to get there.
It's been awhile since I was in a 2010. Is that display unit part of the speedo display, or is it entirely separate? Does it have the Touch Tracer display over it? Tom
1. It's next to but a different kind of display than the speedo. 2. No the touch tracer display overlays the speedo pert of it, it shows up over the fuel, instant mpg display.
Thanks. Now I recall how it looks. I'm going to second the suggestion of using the OP's warranty. Tom
Yeah the only option is going to be to replace the lens over the readout...I'd let the warranty handle it.
Not sure if it was the 3/36 or the extended I purchased when I bought the car. It happened less then a year of owning the car and the repair shop told me they checked with Toyota and found that this has happened to others in the past. All they needed to do was replace the plastic in front of the display unit. Took them about an hour and a half to do.
Thanks. I went in for an oil change the other day and they quoted me $112 to clean the smudge and they wouldn't do a TSB that my car clearly is faulty in. I just wrote an e-mail to the service manager who is very concerned about receiving a 10 on the survey and will likely go to a different Toyota dealership to get this taken care of.
