I have two radio/cassette decks and two multi displays attached to their mounting frames. Trying to figure out the connections to upgrade to a plug&play for an IPod and install a 6cd changer to replace the one in the 2002 Prius. I have a 2002 Wiring Manual and it has been a great help. But I have come across a mystery. Hoping you may be able to solve it.
The wiring diagram cutaway picture of the dash shows three bunches of wires going into the back of the Multi display. Both of the spares I have have 4 different bundles going in. The mystery connector is white male with seven slots, five of which have the large blade connections. The connector is unique and does not show up in the section in the electrical manual that ids the connectors and junction boxes.
I'm wondering, of course, what it is for. Is it for some sort of the plug in tester when it is out of the car? Is it a hook up for something on non US cars? All the connections for the Nav system are in the three listed bundles.

    Thanks for your help
    Ed

You are looking at the M9 connector for the Japanese Market TV Tuner. The reason you will not see it in the manual is because there is no optional TV Tuner for the Prius in North America. Sorry pal, mystery is solved! I looked this up years ago when I wanted to install the Tuner but found out it was far more work than it was worth.

    Hi Ed,

If your's isn't equipped with nav you should have an extra small rectangular 10 pin jack with male pins on one of those 4 monitor harnesses.
Even though the wire colors may not match what's on the diagram, this 10 pin is where I connected my Toyota nav video and it worked fine. I only had trouble making the harness because I tried to follow the diagram and it was impossible due to my wires colors. I finally got smart and just rigged up an extension cord, both ends same pin for pin, except for the shield I only connected at one end (mon end if I remember right). It worked the first time when I plugged it into the nav computer that way.

My point is, if you don't have nav you could connect an Ipod or other video interface there. My plans are to (when I get time) add a pushbutton monitor switch from the PC store at the nav computer and that would give me a place to plug in something like you're describing, without disconnecting the nav to do it. You can find the matching 10 pin plug at various online electronic parts suppliers by putting in the Toyota part# from the Toyota wiring diagrams book. It's conveniently named in the connectors chart as N1, -2, or -3... with monitor and nav unit 10 pin plugs seemingly identical.

For temporary testing you can salvage some of those 2 to 4 pin plugs from an old PC- the ones used for reset, disk activity light, etc. The spacing is correct to plug several of them into the 10 pin jack; or a large IC socket can be cut in half but they're very fragile.

If you already have the single cd, I'm not sure if it's 'y' harness is the same for the 6 disk, would be worth a closer look though, may just need extending or something.

I'm pretty sure I had the spare oddly shaped connector too, but it's been a few months.

    Good Luck,

    Rick

An answer! I knew someone would have tracked this down. TV monitor...wow. I guess there must be a lot of stuck people in traffic jams in Japan watching TV.

That would be so cool, waiting for someone at the train station or whatever, watch the news; maybe I'll try for the TV if the video switcher works out. The Audio is simple, I got one of those Sony Amps designed as a power booster for stock systems and it has audio in - perfect for TV, DVD. Crutchfield had 'em on closeout for about $50.

If anyone else reading this is looking for a simple way to add Iphone/ Ipod audio only, or a little sound boost, or even a subwoofer amp, I think there are a few of those Sony amps I mentioned above (XDP-MU110) still available. They're not wonderful but for $50 a super deal and a big improvement when added to the original radio with or without CD. You can buy a radio install plug plus a so-called 'reverse' plug which plugs into your OE Prius radio for a total of about another $20, and make a plug and play harness to install the small amp between the radio and the car harness.
