I am thinking about buying a bluetooth OBDII dongle and using it with my Nexus 7 running Torque. Maybe I can figure out how to turn off the continuous reverse beep and learn some other stuff about my 2013 Prius. I see a lot of different types on Amazon all for approximately the same price. Are there any that are better than the others? It does occur to me that you probably don't want one that sticks out too far.
I bought this one here at Amazon, haven't had any trouble out of it yet, but being one of the cheap, generic clones, reliability is hit and miss it seems according to the reviews. I don't know if this one would work for sending commands to turn off the reverse beep or anything but I've been able to use it to monitor all the PIDs available for Gen IIs. Edit: Mine does stick out quite a bit but in my '08 I haven't had any issues with it and haven't bumped into it being 6'1 here.
I tested about 3 different OBDII adapters from China sources with ELM327 clones. Finally I ended with STN111xx chip (obdlink, ah design). This chip produces the best message rate and reliability.
Paja, Thanks for the tip. The Ah desing looks like it is a lot more expensive than the cheapest ones on Amazon. I have a bad tendency when confronted with the choice between the cheaper and the more expensive, but better, to go with the cheaper and it is sometimes a mistake to do that. Paja, I am curious what sort of stuff have you done with it to notice the reliability and data rate differences?
In terms of functionality, I'd say its better. With Torque, you can monitor more at a time than what you can with a ScanGauge.

Please notice that cheap adapters are based on ELM327 emulators and AH Design use the STN11xx specialised processor. I didn't make any exact measures. But when I used the cheap china clones based on general PICs sometimes the communication between android and adapter frozen during the drive and have to reset BT communication between units. The sleep power consumption was about 100mA, which is fine with standard automotive crank battery, but not pleasant for Prius 12V one. The data rate is measured by Torque application, so I saw about tripple faster communication.
So in English.... are you saying you recommend the STN11xx type adapter? And also, should one unplug the adapter when not in use to prevent battery drain?
