Loooong road trip, Tallahasse to LA, Cal.

    So next week the wife and I are taking a road trip in the new car, only 5000, miles on it now, it looks like its 2500, miles one way. So she ask me "will the little car make it that far" I said if it doesnt its under warranty. I usually drive 50,000 miles a year and put 156,000 on my 09 jetta tdi in 3 years. Any thoughts other then thats crazy?

    I have a garmin that has NEVER failed me, it got better after I changed the "jill" voice to the english butler, its funny that so many of my friends cant stand the "jill" voice on the Garmin either.

    Enjoy the trip! The Prius should do just fine. As cool as the Prius is, it still doesn't make the trip across TX any shorter.

    My sister and her husband are going Seattle WA to Ft. Meyers FL and back via San Diego CA, Phoenix AZ, San Antonio TX, Ft. Walton Beach FL, Greenwood MS, Guthrie OK, and Las Vegas NV in a Prius v. Should be interesting.

    Dang Jimbo, thats a longer drive then me, Fort walton beach? I was born in Fort walton beach and still have an office and a home there.

    My youngest brother lives in Shalimar FL, but Ft. Walton Beach is easier to find on a map.

    The Prius makes a good old road trip somewhat affordable. I took mine up to Idaho/Washington from L.A. When it was brand new. It didn't miss a beat and got 52.4 MPG average. I gave it no mercy and it performed like a champ.
    Make sure you share the driving chores with the wife and enjoy the scenery. Have a great trip!

    Those Wersterly winds will not have a good effect on your MPG. Watch out for deer. I do not believe I would drive in darkness on I-40 near the OK/TX border because there were an incredible number of dead deer on the side of the road last month when I passed through. Early morning and early evening are dangerous also. With the Sun just coming up, a guy in a Ford Explorer passes by me at 85+ and one minute later up over the hill, a deer is all over the road and his SUV is 50 yards off the side of the road with the front end caved in. Be careful.

    The main difference between a long road trip in a Prius and one in other cars is that you end up putting less gas in a Prius.

    I've done that drive a few times.
    Nothing like looking at a mile marker that says 880-something and realizing that even 12 hours later you're still going to be in the same state.
    Great opportunity to listen to a loooooooong book.

    Don't worry too much about the wind. It'll be pushing you on the way back :)

    Here's hoping the weather cooperates. Be conservative with the gas tank. You may want to fill at 3 or 2 pips just to make sure you don't run out of gas at the most inopportune time. Enjoy the trip. The Prius will.

    I drove my original 05 Prius from Atlanta GA to Phoenix AZ with no issues. I took I 10 From New Orleans all the way to Phoenix. We made two stops on my drive, first day we did Atlanta to New Orleans ( I have family there so it was a natural stop). Second day New Orleans to Fort Stockton TX (the longest and most boring part of the trip). I would suggest, depending on where you plan on going in Cali, stopping around the Phoenix area and doing the drive over the next day. You can make it to LA or San Diego in between 6 and 8 hours depending on traffic and your driving style. I make the trip to LA about 2 times a year it is not a hard trip,

    Agreed!

    Me an a buddy took our '10 From VT to NC and back, doing 75+ most of the way. Never skipped a beat, and we averaged 50mpg for the trip in total. I would have no qualms about driving the car cross country.
