Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon...) Wagon (only) MPG - Please Post Your Results

I have snow tires on my V and I am getting around 41.5 miles to a gallon. Last summer I was getting around 47 mpg. I just passed the 25,000 mile mark two weeks ago. Kind of bummed my free oil changes are gone. Oh well love the V glad I have it.

 

I just got my new 2012 Prius v (four) two and a half weeks ago and have driven 717 miles and am averaging a dismal and disappointing 34.5 mpg. I don't know what's wrong. I know it's winter here in Philly but it hasn't been that cold the past few weeks. I have the standard tires that came with the four, and it is usually just me and my 100-pound bullmastiff puppy driving around (or just me alone). I drive mostly suburban (errands) and city roads, rarely highway for any long period of time. My best mileage trip showed 46.5 when I drive on the highway for about an hour. My husband has a 2011 Prius II that he says gets about 45 mpg consistently. He doesn't understand why my mileage is so low.

When I fill up my car, it says the range is 415 miles. But after driving 80 miles, the new range is just 300 miles. Then by the time I need to refill, I've driven just about 320-330 miles, nowhere near the original estimated range of 415 miles.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

 

Sloviter – I shall ignore the fact that there is no Prius v Four offered for sale in the USA.

Rome was not built in a day. Your problem likely is that you have been driving “Gas-To-Go/Brake-To-Stop” your whole life, and you are still driving “Gas-To-Go/Brake-To-Stop” in piloting your new Prius Petrol Warfighter.

Try to apply these tips to your driving over a week, then come back and report to us if your current 34.5 mpg is history.

 

I experience the same effect to some degree. Most of my driving is city/urban, lots of hills. I average 39mpg in this urban setting(ac on all the time climate control set to auto, tire pressures set to a very comfy 32 psi all around by dealer). Average on straight highway trip is 42+. My v has 24,000 miles on it so the break in time probably helps a little as well.

I also believe it is easier to drive more efficiently on the freeway because you usually have more room to set your own pace of acceleration, slower cruising speed, and if you keep a safe following distance more time to anticipate stops, less time on the brakes, more coasting.

In the city i find i have to push the v a bit more than i like in order to keep up with traffic and not become a road block. So definitely apply what you can of catgic's advice, every little bit helps, even in snarly city traffic.

 

If I'm not mistaken the range auto corrects dynamically, meaning it changes as your fuel consumption becomes known.

So that is normal and desired behavior. As for poor fuel economy, read the excellent tutorials that teach how to become a fuel miser driver.

I'll guess that of 100 threads posted from drivers reporting poor fuel economy, 99 are the driver and 1 is the car. The rare car cause is often underinflated tyres or the handbrake is not completely released. I suggest you switch cars with your hubby for a couple of days. That should tell you pretty quick where to focus your efforts.

 

I am now averaging 45.6 mpg with close to normal driving.

Best round trip today -- just over 80 mpg for 30 miles

Nice weather in the 60 - 70F, no wind.
Trip into the city and back, signals were overall accommodating.

This matches my best similar route in our G2 Prius, so I have now even more confidence that a 70+ mpg tank of only city driving is within my vagon's ability. Stay tuned, I think I'll have a go next weekend while not watching the Masters.

First full tank: 50.9 miles per gallon in mostly city driving, temperatures in the 30s-40s F, two drivers
Second full tank: 48.3 mpg, mostly highway driving, temps 40s F, one driver, two passengers plus luggage

I'm still learning how to drive this beast. My wife doesn't pay as much attention to mpg, so probably pulled down the average a bit. Always Eco mode, and we use EV as much as possible. I love getting home late at night when I can coast through town on electric and climb the hill in EV mode at 4 or 5 mph.

UPDATE: I've been trying to do pulse-and-glide. So far on this tank in mostly city and suburban driving, I'm getting around 57 mpg.

 

High=56.5 mpg
Low=38.0 mpg
Ave=46.5 mpg

I have not checked into this thread for quite awhile. I now have 20,895 miles on my 2012 v 2 . the calculated mpg is 46.671 for the 20K+ miles. The displayed mpg is 48.7 for the same 20k + miles. A difference of 2 mpg on the high side. Approx. Only 15% of these miles are interstate driving, the remaining are mostly country roads in hilly Pa. and flat FL. Not much cold weather driving. Non aggressive driving, but not a hyper miler. The tires are original tires, inflated to 41 psi front and 40 psi rear.

47.5 today average.....1000 miles total; 80% city. v5 Great!

 

I live in Florida, no special driving techniques, mostly highway, owned it for 3 1/2 weeks, have 2200 miles on it and I am getting 46MPG. I am happy with that and I love it!!

 

This tank is @ 43.1 mpg; have approximately 1/4 tank fuel left. About 410 miles on existing tank.

My daily drive is 4.2/100 kmg which is 56 mpg. My girlfriend however isn't the fuel efficient driver that I am, so she's at 6/100 kmg or 39.2 mpg.

Are these normal stats in the States as well? Because I know there are quite some differences between the US and EU version.

 

Me too! 2000 miles not reaching 40 avg...only 38.6

 

The Prius is supposed to get 40 on the low end...I only get 38.6avg. 42 and 44 on the hig yet, cah end. In FL, not too hot.

 

Computer said 44 mpg, went 527 miles on tank (had 22 mile range left) took 11.1 gal to fill.
